A European University in the Making!
YUFE - Young Universities for the Future of Europe". We are an alliance of ten European universities and two non-academic partners. Together, we aim to build an open and inclusive European university. As part of this endeavour, YUFE offers students and university staff Europe-wide opportunities to develop and grow in their academic and professional pursuits.
YUFE is an alliance selected and funded by the European Commission. U Bremen also receives support from the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and the Senator for Science and Ports of the State of Bremen.

BioYUFE brings together European research and teaching in the life sciences

From Croatia to England, from courses to webinars: YUFE makes life sciences European. Werner Ulrich, Professor of Ecology and Biogeography at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, has been dedicated to this cause for three years.

YUFE supports departmental activities

For 2024, funding of up to €5,000 is possible - subject to the State of Bremen approving funds. A wide variety of measures can be funded that anchor YUFE more deeply in the department, increase visibility or strengthen exchanges with YUFE partner universities.

Jutta Günther Elected YUFE Vice-President

Professor Jutta Günther, President of the University of Bremen, has been elected Vice-President of the YUFE Alliance. She will chair the Strategic Council, which is made up of the leaders of all universities.

YUFE is a network of young and innovative universities in Europe. Our goal is the development of a European university, open to all, inclusive and participatory.

YUFE is mobility: the exchange between the partners of our network, i.e. students, teachers, researchers and all other members of the universities is fully supported.

YUFE is student-centred and multilingual: students are present in all YUFE committees and are centrally involved in all developments and decisions. On this basis YUFE designs a "Student and Staff Journey", career paths and partnership projects with local non-university stakeholders in four focus areas. Within the alliance language training is promoted at all levels.

YUFE is more than just a university: All YUFE universities are closely linked to the economy, politics and society in their regions. YUFE thus stands for close ties to the regions. All universities work together with companies, civil society organizations, local government and administration in order to bring the European idea to life.

At YUFE, we have four focus areas that guide us in shaping our activities: European Identity, Citizens' Well-Being, Digital Societies, and Sustainability. Through our focus areas, we want to make a positive contribution to the future of Europe and help shape a sustainable, secure, and united society.

YUFE enables all students to have a European study experience. The YUFE Student Journey offers the opportunity to attend courses at nine different universities over four semesters completely free. Whether through a semester abroad, individual modules online or on-site, a summer course, a joint project, volunteer work or learning languages with language courses in Spanish or Finnish, for example: YUFE students receive recognition for these European study elements with their degree, and their certificate identifies them as Europeans.

Researchers, teachers, and members of administration and management have development opportunities and career paths open to them across national borders.YUFE facilitates shorter and longer periods of teaching, research, and job shadowing at partner universities, as well as a variety of continuing education opportunities for academic and non-academic staff, which not only offer participants the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in the respective field. They also have the opportunity to talk to members of the nine other YUFE universities, learn about best practices and expand their intercultural skills.

By establishing a close cooperation with local stakeholders YUFE Universities contribute to the Smart Specialisation Strategy of their region, creating a unique pool of knowledge and insight, experience and best practice models for students, academics, businesses and citizens.
A first pilot project is Inno4YUFE, which aimed to reduce barriers to student entrepreneurship and strengthen the role of universities as a springboard for entrepreneurial career paths.

YUFE connects 150,000 students, 25,000 employees and 10 million citizens in the "YUFE cities". Our aim is to find joint solutions for the challenges on site by means of a close partnership between universities and civil societies.
With the YUFE Community Volunteering Programme, students have the opportunity to get involved locally, for example in educational support of young people, helping with charitable events, accompanying senior citizens or supporting families with disabled children in the summer.

YUFE's Diversity and Inclusivity Vision is for all YUFE institutions to become, and be recognised as, leaders in diversity and inclusivity. The "YUFE Diversity and Inclusivity Strategy" was developed for this purpose.

The YUFE Alliance offers various exchange opportunities for students and employees of the University of Bremen. The following funding options are available:

Students: Regular Erasmus+ funds are available to students to support stays at the YUFE partner universities as part of the Student Journey. More information
Employees: To support workshops, staff weeks, further training and teaching collaborations, employees (administration and science) can apply for funds to promote Erasmus Staff Mobility und Teaching Staff Mobility.
Departments: Cooperations with YUFE partner universities can be funded with a maximum of EUR 5,000 from funds from the state of Bremen. This funding is advertised annually at the beginning of June. More information on the 2024 call (PDF).
Teaching collaborations: Funds from the Erasmus+ program are available to develop and organize "Blended Intensive Programs" (BIP). More information

Students are key members of the Alliance and provide important input on all study issues. They are represented with voting rights in all committees and working groups of the YUFE network, including at the management level. There is a student parliament, the so-called Student Forum, to which three students from each partner university are delegated.
