Study Program

The International Romance Studies master’s degree programme prepares young scholars for careers in fields that require cultural mediation and a profound knowledge of and perspective on romance languages and literatures that reaches across Europe and beyond. The programme combines Francophone and Hispanophone studies with literary, film, cultural, and linguistic studies, and it incorporates inquiry-based modules and a mandatory stay abroad.

The full diversity and global importance of romance literatures is revealed by the combined study of literary theory, narratology, film and media studies, contemporary and modern cultural history, Spanish and Latin American literature, French literature from the Mediterranean and postcolonial literature. The sources and effects of variation and change in contemporary Romance languages—systematic linguistic, as well as cultural and social factors such as migration and interaction—comprise one of the focal points of linguistic study. To this end, linguistic research and study in Bremen place an emphasis on applied linguistics and authentic language data.    

The master’s programme cooperates with the research institutes in faculty 10—the Institute for Postcolonial and Transcultural studies (INPUTS), Bremen Institute for Canada and Quebec studies (BIKQA); Ibero-America-Institute (IIA) and Bremen Institute for Transmedial Textuality Research (BltT)—to insure the integration of study and research.

A variety of international partnerships are ongoing and under development. Currently, the department has research and language programme exchanges or collaborations with thirty-six universities in Spain and Latin America, twenty-five in France and French-speaking countries, three in Portugal and twelve in Italy.

RESEARCH

This is a research-based master’s programme. It includes research modules in literature, culture and linguistic studies across romance languages, as well as international academic experience and training in scholarly practices such as research and teaching.  

The Double Degree programme is research-oriented. We therefore offer research modules in literature, film and linguistics, international university experience and other Romance languages.
