The 4-semester Master's programme Systems Engineering II begins with an advanced semester with the 5 modules of the advanced module:

• - Advanced module Systems Engineering (6 CP)
• - Advanced module Electrical Engineering (6 CP)
• - Advanced Module Computer Science (6 CP)
• - Advanced module Production Engineering (6 CP)
• - Fundamentals of Systems Engineering (6 CP).

The 3-semester Master's programme Systems Engineering I is identical to the 2nd to 4th semester of the 4-semester Master's programme Systems Engineering II:

3 Integration Modules in which students gain basic knowledge to continue their studies in the chosen specialization area:

• Integration Module Electrical Engineering (6 CP),
• Integration Module Computer Science (6 CP), and
• Integration Module Production Engineering (6 CP).

The area of competence, in which students gain knowledge relevant and characteristic for the chosen specialization:

• Module Specialization Area (12 CP),
• Module Area of Competence (12 CP) or Module Research Project (12 CP).

The area of complementary knowledge and skills defines these modules:

• Module Complementary knowledge and skills I (12 CP),
• Module Complementary knowledge and skills II (6 CP) or Module Research Foundations (6 CP).

The module Masterthesis:

• Module Masterthesis incl. Colloquium and a non-graded assignment in the form of a presentation or report (30 CP), and
• Module Masterthesis incl. Colloquium and a written (non-graded) assignment in the form of a publication (30 CP).

Each specialization can be completed in the variant "Application orientation in industrial research" or in the variant "Research orientation". The latter offers students who wish to pursue a career in research and science the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge in scientific work.

The study plans for the two degree programs

• - System Engineering I (3 semesters, 90CP)
• - System Engineering II (4 semesters, 120CP)

represent a recommendation for the course of study. The first semester of the 4-semester master's degree program Systems Engineering II comprises the advanced area with basic and advanced modules. The 2nd to 4th semesters of the 4-semester master's program Systems Engineering II are identical to those of the 3-semester master's program Systems Engineering I.

Modules can be attended by students in a different order. The range of modules distinguishes between the respective specialisation chosen; in addition, each specialisation can be completed in the variants "research orientation" or "application orientation in industrial research". The course plan shows the study programme exemplarily for these combination options.

The programme defines four different specializations:

• Automation and Robotics,
• Embedded Systems and System Software,
• Mechatronics, and
• Production Engineering;

of which every can be studied in the optional "Research deepening" field of study with a greater focus on scientific work.

Although students are encouraged to do one, a practicum is not an obligatory part of the master´s programme Systems Engineering.

A full semester abroad is not compulsory but possible and welcome.

In addition to the classical course forms (e.g. lectures, exercises, laboratories), the student´s scientific work and team-oriented working methods are emphasised.

Master graduates in the subject of Systems Engineering are able to consider the system as one whole unit. Their knowledge and skills in the three disciplines (electrical engineering, computer science and production/mechanical engineering) is deepened and applied in one specialization area. Thus, graduates in the Systems Engineering master´s programme have a very broad field of work e.g. development, programming and maintenance of complex facilities and systems in industry. Furthermore, they can apply their knowledge and skills in companies and organizations by managing scheduling or working in the technical EDP area.

They can work in a research oriented and scientific environment. This applies especially students studying the option "Research deepening".

The master's programme Systems Engineering offers excellent preparation for doctoral studies.

Graduates qualify for admission to doctoral studies.

The master´s programme Systems Engineering offers excellent opportunities for students to be involved in the (interdisciplinary) research at the University as it is a joint programme supported by three faculties:

• Faculty 01: Physics / Electrical Engineering,
• Faculty 03: Mathematics / Computer Science, and
• Faculty 04: Production Engineering – Mechanical Engineering and Process Engineering (leading faculty).

Members of the three faculties (Faculty 01, 03 and 04) of the University of Bremen carry out the Systems Engineering master´s programme.
