The digital transformation entails lasting changes for organizations in business, administration, education and society. The MIS Master's program educates students to take an active role in managing and shaping these changes. Therefore, the study program goes beyond the technical focus of business informatics and combines technical expertise with management competence.

It is designed to enable graduates to take on a mediating role in the digital transformation of business, administration, education, and society. In particular, they should understand the management challenges that arise in the design and implementation of digital technologies for or in the aforementioned areas.

In addition to the Master's Thesis and the General Studies area, the program is divided into three study sections:

„Management Information Systems“ (MIS)

The MIS study section consists of four compulsory modules. Students acquire the theoretical concepts and methodological tools fundamental to MIS. These include various theoretical foundations on the fields of information systems and organization studies, qualitative and quantitative methods for the study of information systems and transformation processes in the context of organizations, and a transfer module on the professional and academic practice of information systems research.

„Managing Digital Innovation“ (MDI)

The MDI study section consists of three compulsory modules. Students deal with the business implications of digital technologies. They learn basic theoretical principles from the fields of organizational and information systems research, build on these to deepen their business management skills, and link these to issues of digital innovation.

„Computer Science“ (INF)

The INF study section consists of three compulsory modules. Students are particularly concerned with researching the organizational transformation processes initiated by digitalization. They get to know strategic and operative processes of IT service management, deal with data-based decision-making processes and take further courses from the master's program in computer science in order to sharpen their informatics profile.

A total of 120 credit points (CP) is awarded in the master's program; these are distributed evenly over the entire duration of the program with 30 CP per semester.

In the first year of study, students learn the information technology and management-specific fundamentals for the management of information systems in three study sections. Compulsory modules are assigned to the three study sections. Within some modules, students can pick elective courses.

In the third semester, students apply the fundamentals they have learned in an MIS project course. With 24 CP, this module takes up almost the entire workload of the semester and prepares students for the master's thesis (which takes up the entire workload of the fourth semester), both in terms of content and the methods to be applied.

Internships are not mandatory in the master's program, but can be carried out at the student's own request and initiative during the lecture-free period. The faculty's Office of Practice and Transfer is available to answer any questions regarding internships. Students can use the faculty's own career portal "7Careers" during their search for internships or contact the central Career Center of the University of Bremen.

A semester abroad is not mandatory – however, it is recommended and the faculty supports and advises students in these cases. The faculty maintains more than 80 cooperations with partner universities in the ERASMUS area and worldwide (Africa, Asia, South and North America). In this context, the faculty offers various scholarship opportunities, e.g. for the partner University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa, where students have the chance to receive a DAAD-ISAP scholarship. Furthermore, the faculty offers tuition-free stays at U.S. partner universities such as the State University of New York at Binghamton or Stony Brook.

The recognition of credits earned abroad is regulated via Learning Agreements. Before the stay abroad, the student and the Office of International Affairs at the faculty agree on a list of courses to be taken abroad and fix this in the Learning Agreement. In the Master's degree programs, teaching regularly takes place in the form of seminars. In contrast to a lecture, seminars are more strongly oriented towards student participation. The topics of a seminar are discussed together. Students can, among other things, give presentations on the seminar topic, or work on problems in groups. Within the student project, students apply their previously acquired knowledge, e.g. in solving real subject-specific problems.

The graduates' fields of employment are oriented towards both internationally operating companies and companies in the regional economy, which have a need for well-trained graduates of business informatics with management focus in order to secure and expand their competitive situation. Graduates find employment, for example, in the fields of project, innovation and information management, process design, product development, or IT and management consulting. They support companies in digital transformation through strategic management, change management and the development of new business models. The job situation for graduates of Management Information Systems is good and is expected to remain positive in view of the developments of digitalization.

The degree qualifies the graduate for admission to a doctoral program.

The program is offered jointly by the faculties 7 (Business Studies and Economics) and 3 (Mathematics and Computer Science) and is equally closely related to the subjects of Computer Science and Business Studies. Insights into the respective research activities and current projects are given via the lecturers of both faculties.
