For inclusion in a master's degree is the completion of studies at the Bachelor's level requirement.
The subject-specific entry requirements are set out in the current Aufnahme-/Zulassungsordnung (admission regulations).
It also includes the different deadlines for the provision of evidence.

The ProMat master´s programme comprises a total of 120 CP distributed over 4 semesters. The programme is structured as follows:

5 Foundation Modules, in which, according to their personal knowledge, students gain advanced knowledge in subjects:

• Chemistry (9 CP),
• Computer science tools (9 CP),
• Engineering (9 CP),
• Mathematics (9 CP), and
• Physics (9 CP).

2 Specialization Modules, in which fundamental scientific theories and methods are taught, the application of which allows a deeper understanding of systems, complex methods, experimental techniques and processes:

• Theory-oriented specialization (12 CP) and
• Application-oriented specialization (12 CP).

2 Research Experience Modules, in which the theoretical foundations of scientific work are taught, allowing students to gain their first independent international research experience:

• Research processes (9 CP) and
• Research stay abroad (12 CP).

1 Master thesis Module (30 CP).

The subject-specific course content in the Foundation and Specialization Modules can be selected from more than 350 courses in order to focus the individual curriculum around the personal research interests.

Based on the individual curriculum ProMat provides students with expert knowledge in: 

•     materials physics, materials chemistry and materials science;
•     the relationship between materials properties and process parameters;
•     the synthesis and production of materials, components and systems;
•     methods for process control and optimisation;
•     the computer-based modelling of materials and processes;
•     the application of AI tools in materials science and process engineering;
•     the sustainable development, utilisation and recycling of materials.

Module

The module schedule and sequence is a recommendation only; modules can be attended in a different order. 

The unique nature of ProMat allows the students to tailor their individual scientific and research interests within the MAPEX research landscape and within the foreseen module structure.

Of particular importance are the independent scientific work and the international research experiences. Students learn to develop their own research questions beyond the state of art, and to contribute to original and novel research. They learn and implement scientific methods in order to interpret their acquired results in an interdisciplinary manner.

By completing their studies, students are ideally prepared for a scientific activity in their chosen field of research, or in research-related areas of industry.

A Practical (Practicum) is not part of the ProMat programme.

A research stay abroad during the master studies is an obligatory part of the curriculum and includes a stay at a university or research institute abroad for a period of min. eight weeks during which students carry out research and scientific work.

A full semester abroad is not compulsory but possible and welcome. It can be combined with the research stay abroad, preferably in the third semester.

In addition to the classical course forms (for example lectures, exercises, laboratories), great importance is placed on the student´s independent scientific work, which takes place in the Research Experience Modules for most of the part. The special feature is a stay at a university or research institute abroad for a period of min. eight weeks during which students carry out scientific research work.

For each module, the module coordinator specifies the exact number of exams and their form at the beginning of the semester. This is done in agreement with the lecturers delivering the courses and recorded in the individual curricula.

ProMat graduates qualify for admission to doctoral studies and further career steps in academia and also for research-oriented working environments in the private sector.

This new research-oriented master´s programme is embedded in the MAPEX Center for Materials and Processes and is designed to prepare students for a future scientific career within the scope of the MAPEX research landscape.

ProMat offers excellent opportunities for students to get involved in interdisciplinary research as it is a joint programme supported by all five STEM-faculties of the University of Bremen: 

• Faculty 1: Physics / Electrical Engineering,
• Faculty 2: Biology / Chemistry, 
• Faculty 3: Mathematics / Computer Science,
• Faculty 4: Production Engineering - Mechanical Engineering and Process Engineering (leading faculty) and
• Faculty 5: Geosciences.

Members of all five STEM-faculties (1 - 5) of the University of Bremen carry out the ProMat master´s programme.

The approx. 80 MAPEX members, professors, lectures and scientists teaching at the University of Bremen are eligible to mentor the students as their personal mentors.

Within MAPEX, the University faculties conduct shared research and teaching activities together with the following non-university research institutes in Bremen:
