Building upon the broad skills learned in a Bachelor's program in mathematics or in a related one, this Master's program offers the opportunity to study entirely according to individual and personal interests, and therefore select from two different ways:

In the theory-oriented way, students deal with mathematical topics at the cutting edge of research within the framework of the special teaching format of reading courses, among other things.

In the application-oriented way, students study a second subject in addition to mathematics, such as biology, chemistry, electrical engineering, geosciences, computer science, philosophy, physics, production engineering, or economics.

Whichever way you choose, in both you will specialize in one of the mathematical fields of algebra, analysis, numerical analysis, or statistics/stochastics.

Thus, this Master's program allows you to specialize according to your own interests within the framework of an international English-language study program and thus ideally prepares you for an international career or a subsequent PhD-thesis.

The Master of Science Mathematics is a 4 semesters Master's program with a total of 120 CP (credit points). Moreover, it offers 4 areas of spectialization: algebra, analysis, numerical analysis, and statistics/stochastics, and includes two different ways of studying:

with application subject:

• specialization (66 CP): two specializing lectures (9 CP each), two seminars (4.5 CP each), a Reading Course (9 CP) and the Master's thesis (30 CP)
• broadening (27 CP): two lectures (9 CP each) and two seminars (4.5 CP each)
• electives (9 CP): one additional specializing or broadening lecture (9 CP)
• application subject (18 CP): choice from biology, chemistry, electrical or mechanical engineering, geosciences, computer science, philosophy, physics, or economics

without application subject:

• specialization (45 CP or 36 CP): two specializing lectures (9 CP each), two seminars (4.5 CP each), one or two reading courses (9 CP each), and the Master's thesis (30 CP)
• broadening (27 CP or 36 CP): two broadening lectures (9 CP each), two seminars (4.5 CP each) and, if applicable, one Reading Course (9 CP)
• electives (9 CP): one additional specializing or broadening lecture (9 CP)
• free choice (9 CP): choice from the modules of the department 03 or from the General Studies of the University of Bremen

A special feature of the Master's program in Mathematics at the University of Bremen are the Reading Courses. In these courses, students are introduced to independent work with mathematical literature. This takes place in groups under the guidance of university lecturers who offer regular meetings and review and correct the work; occasionally there is also individual supervision. One Reading Course must be in the chosen area of concentration.

If you are studying without an applied subject, the Free Choice area, which is part of the University-wide General Studies area (see below), can be used to gain professional qualifications. This can be achieved by additional modules from the department 03 or by an internship of several weeks with 6 CP, which gives insights into future mathematical professional practice.

One of the following areas can be chosen as a specialization or focus of study within the master's program in mathematics:

• Algebra
• Analysis
• Numerics
• Stochastics/Statistics

The decision regarding the specialization must be made at the latest when registering for the master's thesis.

Students can complete a professional internship for several weeks in order to gain insights into later mathematical professional practice. During the internship, students should familiarize themselves with typical requirements of a future professional field; in particular, they should use mathematical methods to work on problems relevant to that field.

The organization of an internship and the choice of company or institute are the responsibility of the students. An internship can be carried out in Germany or abroad in any company or research institute that can guarantee an internship which fits the guidelines described here. An internship at a purely mathematical institute or department is excluded. To prepare for a professional internship, interested students are strongly advised to seek advice from the internship officer.

Instruction consists of courses or lectures with exercises/tutorials or seminars. Another form of teaching are the two Reading Courses I & II. In addition, an internship of several weeks can be completed, e.g., in a company or institute in Germany or abroad.

• Oral presentation with written report, optionally with a comprehensive technical discussion/interview
• Extensive written report (term paper) followed by a comprehensive technical discussion/interview

Mathematicians are in demand not only nationally but also internationally, not only in science but also in almost all areas of the job market, such as handling, analyzing and evaluating large amounts of data, creating and interpreting complex climate models, prototype design in industry, finance and insurance, software development, management consulting, data security as well as medicine or digital communication. In short, wherever analytical thinking at the highest level is required, independent of specific technical knowledge.

In addition, the master's degree in mathematics can be followed seamlessly by a PhD thesis at the university of Bremen.

The Department 03 - Mathematics includes research and teaching from the areas of algebra & topology, analysis, industrial mathematics & numerics, stochastics & statistics, didactics of mathematics. For more information on each area, see here.

There are currently 14 full-time professors (incl. cooperative, junior and interim professorships) in the mathematics portion of Faculty 3, who together with a large number of research assistants cover the teaching in the degree programs in mathematics, math education, industrial mathematics and elementary mathematics.
