The University also Takes on Trainees: 34 Young People Start Their Vocational Training

The University of Bremen is not only an attractive place to study, teach and carry out research. As a major employer in the region it also offers young people interesting opportunities for vocational training. Within the context of the German dual system of vocational training, the University is currently training young people in 18 different occupations. These range from the skilled trades and technical professions, through laboratory occupations, up to service activities. In September 34 new trainees – ten of them women – started their vocational training at the University of Bremen. Most of them can be seen in our photo, which was taken during an introductory tour of the campus. They are being trained for a number of different occupations, including biology and chemical lab technicians, information technology technicians, industrial mechanics, carpenters and joiners, micro-technicians, plant mechanics, book binders, warehousing specialists, and media designers. In addition to these professional occupations the University also trains people for jobs in the area of office management and general administration. Periods of vocational training range between two and three years. Altogether, the University of Bremen currently employs some 100 trainees.
