The University of Bremen mourns for its friend and sponsor Hartmut Jürgens, who died on 23 September 2017 in Bremen. “I remember Hartmut Jürgens as a special and generous person who rejoiced at being given a second life. He wanted others to take part in this happiness,” says Professor Bernd Scholz-Reiter, President of the University of Bremen. “His death is a loss for all of us. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family.” Hartmut Jürgens was closely connected to the University for many years. In December 2015, he and his wife founded the “Iris und Hartmut Jürgens Foundation - an opportunity for a new life”. The foundation has two funding foci: It supports mainly medical research and therapeutic research as well as projects for displaced persons enrolled at the University of Bremen. In 1983, Hartmut Jürgens submitted his doctoral thesis supervised by the Bremen-based mathematics professor, Heinz-Otto Peitgen. He then directed the Computer Graphics Laboratory “Dynamic Systems” at the University of Bremen, which became known for its worldwide contributions to chaos research. As co-author of numerous books on chaos theory and fractals, he achieved international renown. He was Deputy Head of the “Center for Complex Systems and Visualization” CeVis in the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science for twenty years. Jürgens also played a key role in the development of MeVis (now Fraunhofer MeVis), and for ten years he led the spin-off company MeVis-Technology as its managing director.
