for the subject area Engineering Mechanics to be filled.

Job description

Open to unconventional approaches in research and teaching, the University of Bremen has retained its character as a place of short distances for people and ideas since its foundation in 1971. With a broad range of subjects, we combine exceptional performance with great potential for innovation. As an ambitious research university, we stand for the approach of research-based learning and a strong focus on interdisciplinarity. We actively shape scientific cooperation worldwide in a spirit of partnership.

Today, around 23,000 people learn, teach, research and work on our international campus. In research and teaching, administration and operations, we are firmly committed to the goals of sustainability, climate justice and climate neutrality. Our Bremen spirit is expressed in the courage to try new things in a supportive cooperation, in respect and appreciation for one another. With our study and research profile and as part of the European YUFE network, we assume social responsibility in the region, in Europe and the world.

The professorship will be filled for an initial period of three years as a temporary civil servant. After an interim evaluation with an orientation character, it will be extended for a further three years. Subject to a positive evaluation after six years at the latest, the candidate will be appointed to a lifetime professorship (W2). Tenure-track professors are guaranteed a gradual entry into teaching in order to raise their academic profile.

We are looking for a motivated researcher who already has initial experience in research and teaching and has the potential to strengthen our department, to represent the subject of engineering mechanics with a focus on structural or material mechanics in research and teaching and to make internationally visible contributions to this. Complementing existing activities and collaborating on the expansion of future activities is desirable. This could be, for example, contributions in the fields of aerospace or materials for energy systems. Application experience in methods of machine learning and optimization (e.g. in connection with the development of structures) is desirable. Initial experience in the acquisition of third-party funded projects is welcome. The future post holder should develop independent third-party funding activities and also contribute to joint collaborative initiatives that strengthen the research profile of the department and the university. In addition, we offer the opportunity for the appointee to network in existing focal points of the state and the university, e.g. in the “Research and Transfer Focus Aerospace” of the state (https://www.uni-bremen.de/raumfahrt-an-der-universitaet-bremen/), in the scientific focus “Materials Sciences and their Technologies” of the University of Bremen (Center for Materials and Processes - MAPEX, www.uni-bremen.de/mapex.html) or the Bremen Research Center for Energy Systems - BEST (https://www.uni-bremen.de/best/ueber-uns) of the University of Bremen.

The professor to be appointed is responsible for teaching mechanics in the Bachelor's degree programs as well as advanced courses in the Master's degree programs of the department. As a department, the quality of teaching is particularly important to us. We expect you to enjoy working with students and to be willing to innovatively develop the courses on offer, to provide further training in university didactics and to supervise Bachelor's and Master's students. Since its foundation, the University of Bremen has stood for a close link between research and teaching.

We teach in German and English. If you do not yet have sufficient language skills to teach on the German-language Bachelor's degree course, we would like you to acquire these skills within 2 years and will be happy to support you in doing so.

Requirements

Recruitment requirements are a university degree in engineering or a comparable discipline, an outstanding doctorate in the field of engineering mechanics or a related field, pedagogical aptitude and a willingness to undergo further training in higher education didactics. The potential to establish and lead a working group should be recognizable. The university and the department offer a wide range of mentoring and further training options for personal development, which are available to the appointee free of charge.

If the candidate has been employed as a research assistant before or after the doctorate, the doctoral phase and the employment phase at a German university or a state or significantly state-funded research institution should not exceed a total of six years. The appointment is made on the basis of § 18, 18a BremHG and § 117 BremBG. The interim and tenure evaluation is carried out in a transparent procedure according to criteria that are agreed as part of the appointment negotiations.
