The Bundesverwaltungsgericht in Leipzig has dismissed an objection lodged by the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen in respect of not allowing an appeal against a judgment of the Bremen Oberverwaltungsgericht (OVG) reached on 11 December 2012. This ruling in favor of the University of Bremen brings an irrevocable end to the legal disputes surrounding the license for animal experiments granted to Andreas Kreiter in 2008. In 2012 the OVG underscored outstanding quality of Prof. Kreiter’s research, simultaneously confirming that the stress caused to the macaques was merely moderate at the most. The court is of the opinion that the experiments are ethically justifiable. The Rector of the University, Bernd Scholz-Reiter, is clearly relieved: “I’m more than happy that the legal dispute between the local health authorities and the University of Bremen has at long last come to an end, and that my colleague Andreas Kreiter will be able to continue his internationally renowned research without further interruption.”
