How can robots be made to recognize objects and carry out subsequent processes? How can computer components withstand the heavy shocks and vibrations that occur during a rocket launch, for instance? How can the technical systems in everyday use be improved on? This is stuff for the PhD students enrolled in the Systems Design Research Training Group (SyDe). In a new video clip produced by the University of Bremen, the leader of the group, Professor Rolf Drechsler, and scientific coordinator, Dr. Ulrich Kühne, present members of the group and their work.
In cooperation with external research institutes
Promoting young academic talent is a cornerstone of the University of Bremen’s excellence concept – and the SyDe Research Training Group is a good example. SyDe is a structured program of graduate training that offers optimum support for young researchers on their way to a doctorate.
What’s so special? This Research Training Group is run in interdisciplinary cooperation between the University and two of its extra-mural partners in research: The German Aerospace Center and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence. This is a great opportunity for the SyDe fellows: They not only receive support from their supervisors but also benefit from being directly involved in the practice-oriented activities of their host institutes – with lots of experts they can learn from.
Showcase for excellence
The Excellence Initiative has entered its second phase. The clips produced by the University of Bremen’s Press and Communications Bureau in cooperation with the Zentrum für Multimedia in der Lehre [Centre for multimedia and teaching] provide insights into some of the projects made possible by the Excellence Initiative.
