After graduating
You want to stay in Germany
After successfully completing your studies, you can apply for a resident permit for the purpose of seeking employment in Germany in accordance with § 20 Para. 1 No. 1 AufenthG. The resident permit is issued for up to 18 months in order to find qualified employment in Germany. As long as you are looking for a job, you are allowed to work in any occupation. As soon as you have a qualified job, you can have your residence permit for studying converted into a residence permit for skilled workers or an EU Blue Card.
You can find more information on your options during your studies in Germany and after your degree in the ‘Prospects after graduation’ section or in the explanatory video of the Career Center of the University of Bremen.
The Career Center team is a joint institution of the University of Bremen and the Bremen - Bremerhaven Employment Agency.
Students who want to prepare for a career start during their studies, graduates and research assistants on their way to a professional career will find support at the Career Center.

Deregistration with the city
If you are moving permanently to another country, it is necessary to deregister at the relevant BürgerserviceCenter. To do this, you must fill out this form and bring it to the city office together with your identity card one week before you move away.
Cancelling health insurance
You can usually cancel your private health insurance up to three months before the end of the insurance year (depending on the start of the contract). You should state in the cancellation letter that you are moving to another country. For all statutory health insurance companies, you must (as a rule) send a cancellation letter two months in advance - unless it is a fixed-term contract. You can find samples on this website.
Cancelling the licence fee
To cancel your contract, you must declare on the form that you are moving away (‘that I am moving abroad permanently’).
Additional cancellations
You should remember to cancel your internet provider, sports club, telephone contracts and bank account etc. If you are moving away from Bremen and/or Germany, special cancellation deadlines usually apply.
