Public vacancy
The University of Bremen (Faculty 4 - Production Engineering - Mechanical and Process Engineering) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft would like to jointly appoint a
Professorship (f/m/d) (W3 salary grade) for the field of
Electrochemical Engineering and its Materials
Reference number P424/24
and in personal union the
Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM
Job description
With almost 19,000 students and around 2,300 academics, the University of Bremen is the largest higher education institution in the state of Bremen with an international focus and a distinctive research profile in areas such as materials and processes, artificial intelligence and data science. The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM is an internationally recognized R&D institute with an applied materials technology focus.
The University of Bremen and the Fraunhofer IFAM have been cooperating for several decades in the fields of materials research and manufacturing technology. The cooperation and close networking of the Faculty of Production Engineering - Mechanical and Process Engineering with the Fraunhofer IFAM is of great importance for strengthening university engineering sciences in Bremen.
Responsibilities:
The professorship is associated with the responsible collaboration in the institute management at Fraunhofer IFAM, which includes the scientific-technical and entrepreneurial management and development of the institute within the Fraunhofer model and the overall Fraunhofer strategy.
Fraunhofer IFAM conducts application-oriented research in the fields of functional materials, particularly for electrochemical applications, and near-net-shape manufacturing technologies. Products and technologies address major industrial sectors such as mobility, energy, maritime technologies, electronics, medical technology, and life sciences.
In your new role, you will make important contributions to the engineering sciences with regard to various electrochemical systems, their materials and processes. In addition, you will focus on the development, scaling, and application of metallic material systems as well as technology transfer to industrial applications along material, process and product value chains. This includes aspects of sustainability and the resource efficiency of materials as well as the digital transformation of the corresponding material and process value creation.
In the context of research and development of metallic materials, in particular for electrochemical applications, you have in-depth experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Development and characterization of materials and associated processes, in particular for electrochemical systems and/or through the use of electrochemical processes, including the corresponding production engineering implementation
- Data-supported material and process modeling, for example for electrochemical applications or near-net-shape production technologies
- Specific adaptation of the above-mentioned technologies for selected industrial applications
- Technology transfer together with industrial and scientific partners in the above-mentioned subject area
The technologies under consideration should be application-oriented and broadly based, and in particular address societally relevant challenges such as renewable forms of energy, energy storage and energy transition, mobility, resource conservation and maritime technologies.
You will be a competent representative of the above topics in research and teaching as well as act as the contact person for public research funding bodies and research stakeholders from industry and science; you will also further develop the strategic link between the university and the Fraunhofer Institute. We expect your active participation in the design of the department's degree programs, including a willingness to teach in English and German.
Requirements
You are expected to integrate in the faculty as well as the scientific focus area “Materials Science and their Technologies” (MAPEX Center for Materials and Processes) of the University of Bremen and the U Bremen Research Alliance.
In addition, you will have significant leadership experience in large, interdisciplinary research groups, gender and diversity skills as a manager, experience in strategic planning, acquisition and implementation of major national and international research and development projects in various fields, skills in increasing the efficiency of development processes and in technology utilization, as well as teaching experience. In addition to proven research expertise, experience in industry practice is particularly desirable; successful acquisition of industry funding must be demonstrated.
The University of Bremen sees internationalization as a cross-sectional task. We therefore expect participation in activities for the further internationalization of the University in research and teaching.
Recruitment requirements are a completed academic university degree, a doctorate in an engineering or related subject, additional outstanding academic achievements, which have usually been achieved through a habilitation, during a junior professorship or through habilitation-equivalent achievements, e.g. in the context of leading a junior research group at a university or at a renowned research institution or in industry, as well as pedagogical aptitude, which is usually demonstrated by experience in teaching. Appointments are made on the basis of §§ 18 and 20 BremHG and § 116 BremBG.
If the requirements under civil service law are met, the candidate will be appointed for life.
General Information
You can expect varied projects with a high degree of practical relevance and a great deal of creative freedom in research. The University of Bremen and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft pursue a family-friendly personnel policy and offer their employees flexible working hours and support services to help them balance their professional and private lives.
The University of Bremen and IFAM strive for a high level of diversity among their scientists. The university is distinguished by its diversity and gender policy concepts. Female scientists are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications from academics with a migration background or an international CV are also expressly welcomed. Severely disabled applicants with essentially equal professional and personal qualifications will be given priority.
For further information, please contact the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Dr.-Ing. J. Kiefer at dekanfb4@uni-bremen.de or +49 421 218 64777 and for the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft Dr.-Ing. Julia Freis at julia.freisprotect me ?!zv.fraunhoferprotect me ?!.de or +49 (0)89-1205 1152
Application procedure and documents:
Please send your application with the usual documents (curriculum vitae, including a description of your academic career, list of courses held and other evidence of teaching qualifications, list of publications, together with copies of certificates and diplomas), teaching concept (max. 2 pages) and research concept, interests and plans (max. 4 pages), also stating a private postal and e-mail address, by December 31st, 2024 quoting the above reference number to the University of Bremen, Faculty 4 - Production Engineering, Mechanical Engineering & Process Engineering, P.O. Box 330440, 28359 Bremen. In addition, the application documents (without certificates) can also be sent in electronic form (in pdf format) to the following address p424teprotect me ?!uni-bremenprotect me ?!.de.
In addition, please send your application to the President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Holger Hanselka (praesidentprotect me ?!fraunhoferprotect me ?!.de).
The application documents should clearly show how the candidate's planned research activities will further develop the Fraunhofer IFAM and the Faculty at the University of Bremen. The concept should also illustrate how new synergies can be created within the department, the institute and beyond.
