Public vacancy
Faculty 2 (Biology/Chemistry) is seeking to fill the the following position in Biology as of April 1, 2026.
Professorship (f/m/d)
in General and Molecular Microbiology
grade W2 in a civil servant relationship for life (if the requirements under civil service law are met).
Job description
The research focus of the professorship is on a current research area of molecular prokaryotic microbiology with function-related questions using genetic engineering techniques and innovative molecular biological methods. The professorship investigates molecular interactions between prokaryotes and associated eukaryotic organisms (host-microbe interactions). The aim is to understand how microorganisms can contribute to maintaining the dynamics, functionality, sustainability and in particular resilience in ecosystems under climate change, and which molecular mechanisms of host-microbe relationships play a role in this.
We offer excellent working conditions and an environment characterized by collegiality and cooperation. There are numerous opportunities for collaboration with the molecular, microbiological and ecological research groups in the department; in addition, new approaches should be developed with the professorships for Botany and Plant Ecology, which are also to be filled. The role of glycans in biological systems as an important research focus in the department should be taken into account in their research concept. Opportunities for cooperation also exist in the area of the University of Bremen's scientific priorities (see here: www.uni-bremen.de/forschung/forschungsprofil/wissenschaftsschwerpunkte/). Engagement in interdisciplinary cooperation both within and outside the University of Bremen as well as with the partner University of Oldenburg is desirable.
In teaching, the post holder will represent the subject of Microbiology across the board in the German-language Bachelor of Biology course and in the international, English-language Bachelor of Natural Science for Sustainability courses, as well as the Master of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (specialization: Microbial Systems). A willingness to innovatively develop the courses on offer and to undergo further training in university didactics is a prerequisite. The use of media-supported forms of learning and participation in the concept of "research-based learning" is also desirable.
Requirements
Recruitment requirements are a university degree in biology or related subjects, a very good doctorate, a habilitation or equivalent, teaching experience and didactic aptitude. The appointment is based on § 18 BremHG and § 116 BremBG.
General Information
Open for unconventional approaches in research and education. This is what the University of Bremen has always stood for since its foundation 50 years ago. The university’s profile is built on a broad spectrum of subjects, which are preserved in their diversity so that new links and research questions can emerge. This leads to top-level research, both in interdisciplinary research networks and in an individual manner. The teaching profile of the university is consistently oriented towards research-based learning. Our Bremen spirit is found in the support of new ideas and changes, a cooperative community, respect and appreciation for each other, and flat hierarchies.
With our research and education profile, the University of Bremen is taking responsibilities in the region, the continent and the world. The UN Sustainable Development Goals and climate justice in research and education are main focuses. Approximately 23,000 people are studying, teaching, researching and working on our international campus. As a leading European research university and part of the European university network YUFE–Young Universities for the Future of Europe- it is developing a new model for European higher education together with nine other universities.
The University of Bremen is discrimination-sensitive, diverse and family-friendly. It offers a wide range of services to support newly appointed staff, such as the Welcome Center, childcare and the Dual Career Program, supplemented by staff development and continuing education programs. It is committed to implementing the diversity strategy at all levels. We intend to increase the proportion of women in the academic field and in top positions and therefore expressly encourage female academics to apply. We also particularly welcome international applications and applications from people with a migration background. People with severe disabilities will be given priority if their professional and personal qualifications are essentially the same. We attach great importance to proven competence in the consideration of gender and diversity dimensions in research, teaching and personnel management.
Please send us your application with CV, certificates, list of publications, overview of projects and third-party funding, proof of teaching experience and planned research activities. We expect (A-criterion) your concepts for the development and integration of your research at Department 2, in particular for the collaboration on the interdisciplinary topic "Role of glycans in biological systems" and ideas on the collaboration with the new professorships to be filled as well as on the forms of teaching and learning you would like to use and how you would like to promote diversity in teaching, research and the promotion of young scientists (max. 2-3 pages).
Please send your application as a combined pdf file, quoting the reference number P410/24 by January 31, 2025 to Prof. Dr. Christian Wild, Dean of the Department of Biology & Chemistry (FB 2), Leobener Straße, 28359 Bremen, or by e-mail using unencrypted electronic mail to bewerbung-dekanfb2protect me ?!uni-bremenprotect me ?!.de
The Dean will also be happy to make initial contact by telephone on 0421 218-63367. We assure you of confidentiality.
