Further Funding of the Leibniz ScienceCampus Digital Public Health

The Leibniz ScienceCampus Digital Public Health, in which the University of Bremen participates, will receive funding for a further four years. With 1.2 million euros, the Campus, founded in 2019, will be able to expand its successful interdisciplinary research on the digitization of health care.

“I am very pleased about the continued funding,” says Hajo Zeeb, professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Bremen and spokesperson for the Leibniz ScienceCampus Digital Public Health.

“On the one hand, it validates our successful work, and on the other, I am delighted that we will be able to further explore this important topic for the future. There are plenty of aspects to investigate, ranging from the impact of social networks on our health to topics around artificial intelligence.”

From Exercise Apps to Telemedicine: New Opportunities and Chances

The Campus focuses on the digitization of health care. Whether it’s exercise apps, nutrition and fitness programs on your smartphone, or telemedicine, state-of-the-art digital technologies make it possible to reach a large number of people quickly and inexpensively and have them participate in measures that promote their health. But legal and ethical issues often fall by the wayside in the process. For example, how can the “digital divide” between individual population groups be bridged? What can be done to uphold privacy and data security? And how can researchers process and make use of the vast amounts of data for the benefit of all?

Ethical Issues of Digitization Also Highlighted

“The Leibniz ScienceCampus Digital Public Health addresses these problems,” explains Zeeb, who heads the department of Prevention and Evaluation at the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS, as part of a cooperation professorship with the University of Bremen. He adds: “To this end, we bring together researchers from the fields of health sciences, computer science, statistics, law, communication sciences, ethnology, and philosophy. The pandemic in particular has shown that cooperation between different disciplines provides the best answers to many health questions. Together, we want to answer tomorrow’s questions.”

The Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS, the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS, and the University of Bremen have been cooperating in the research network since the start of the funding. The University of Oldenburg and OFFIS – Institute for Information Technology have been added as new partners for the second phase of funding.
