6,382 students (37 percent of those contacted) took part in an anonymous online survey in July and August. Of those who participated, at least 87 percent have received the first jab and 60 percent are already fully vaccinated. Two percent of the students will be vaccinated in the next two weeks and a further two percent remain undecided. Nine percent revealed that they do not wish to be or are unlikely to be vaccinated in the coming weeks.
Students Want to Return to In-Person Classes
The majority of the students asked (70 percent) hopes that university operations will take place as usual in person when all students have been given the opportunity to make a COVID-19 vaccination appointment. In general, the majority (84 percent) feel that they have received sufficient information concerning the COVID-19 vaccination.
“The survey shows a high level of willingness among students,” states Dr. Heide Busse from the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS. “The results correlate with surveys undertaken at other universities in Germany.”
“This is a great step towards enabling face-to-face operations on campus,” says Thomas Hoffmeister, Vice President Academic. He called on students who are not yet vaccinated to go and get the jab. “It is only in this way that we will be able to reach our goal of enabling teaching staff and students to be on campus.”
