The internationally decorated conference rooms of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS – a UBRA member – created a festive setting for the event. “UBRA’s strength lies in the researchers, who bring their skills and passion from all over the world to Bremen. Dear researchers: welcome!” said Dr. Mandy Boehnke, Vice President for International Affairs, Academic Qualification, and Diversity at University of Bremen, as she greeted around 100 attendees. She also took the opportunity to present the Welcome Center’s new projects from the past year. Amongst others, these included the successful hosting of the EURAXESS annual conference. Additionally, the center's services were expanded from supporting solely international researchers to national guest researchers, and a new Welcome Guide was introduced. This online service allows interested researchers to quickly obtain personalized information about their research stay in Bremen with just a few clicks.
Against the backdrop of current political developments, Dr. Boehnke emphasized, "Science holds the power to build bridges, to bring us together regardless of nationalities, to foster ties even across entire continents." She called for an open-minded approach that rejects hate and recognizes science as a unifying force between cultures, nations, and people.
The cultural highlight of the evening was an impressive Indian dance performance, by Sisriksha, a master's student at the University of Bremen. She presented a classical Indian dance from the state of Odisha, blending traditional Indian elements with well-known European songs to create a harmonious fusion of several cultures.
In addition to stimulating conversations and opportunities to forge new connections, participants were treated to international food and drinks. Creative activities were also on offer: guests could design postcards, make bracelets, and share ideas and experiences. Many researchers attended with their partners and children, further enriching the event and contributing to a relaxed, open atmosphere.
The reception provided both international and domestic researchers with an ideal platform for exchanging ideas and building new scientific networks. The positive feedback from the participants showed that such events are a valuable component of a thriving culture of welcome within the member institutions of the U Bremen Research Alliance.
