In the presence of several active research ambassadors of the university, Scholz-Reiter presented certificates of appointment to Professor Rozena Maart from South Africa for the Faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies, Dr. Natascha Zaun from the UK for the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor Alex Makulilo from Tanzania, for the Faculty of Law.
First-Hand Information
In his speech, Scholz-Reiter had previously emphasized how the commitment of the ambassadors is vital for the internationalization of the university: “You provide first-hand information on our university to students and scientists. You promote interaction between researchers and help to create a worldwide alumni network.” The University of Bremen strives to build global networks with personal bridges in order to continually improve research and teaching. The President reiterated that the ambassadors represent said bridges and thus form an important part of the internationalization efforts of the university.
Research in Bremen over Several Years
The university has been building the ambassador network since 2015. There are currently 10 ambassadors who can be found on nearly every continent. All ambassadors are research alumnus of the university – the majority worked in science here for several years. The newly appointed ambassador and legal scholar Alex Makulilo from the Open University of Tanzania initially came to the University of Bremen as a DAAD scholarship holder and then as a recipient of the Alexander-von-Humboldt scholarship. Rozena Maart researches and teaches at the University of Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa. She has been to Bremen repeatedly as a visiting lecturer. Natascha Zaun, a native of Germany, completed her PhD studies at the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS). She now works at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Multifaceted Duties
In their frame of their new position, the three scientists can expect varied duties. They will promote research from Bremen at their respective universities and act as contact person for researchers and students who are interested in a degree or research stay in Bremen.
Regular visits to Bremen are also part of the ambassador duties. The ambassadors are meeting in the middle of June for a workshop with the university management and their hosts in each of the faculties. They will be informed of current research projects at the university, communicate with each other about their ambassador duties in their home countries and develop ideas for the future together. The final program point is a visit to OPEN CAMPUS.
