The broad spectrum of modern music styles is the subject of academic analysis. The programme aims to create a better understanding of music. Studies pursue an interdisciplinary approach that takes into account the historical, regional and cultural contexts of the emergence, dissemination and appropriation of music. The academic programme is delivered in close cooperation with the Hochschule für Künste.

Main objective of the study programme is the critical reflection of music in a broad sense to obtain academic and cultural competence. Within the academic framework of historical and systematic musicology fundamental knowledge as well as a diversity of musical appearances and effects will be explored. Thus, music from different historical periods and sociocultural contexts, like serious and popular music genres, as well as (psycho-)acoustical, psychological, sociological, and aesthetic phenomenon of music production and reception are part of the curriculum.
The programme involves eleven compulsory modules with 72 CP in total. These include classes in music theory (9 CP) provided by and given at the Conservatory for the Arts (Hochschule für Künste). For the Bachelor thesis 12 CP are given. The additional area of specialization consists of the internship (9 CP) and the elective area (12 CP). The area of General studies amounts to another 27 CP.
Studies involve a compulsory work practical to be undertaken in the 5th semester.
Career opportunities exist in cultural institutions such as the press, radio broadcasting, television and music management.
