Lena Frerichs was named Bremen’s Athlete of the Year at this year’s sports gala at the GOP Varieté Theater. The 19-year-old field hockey player is studying teacher education for secondary schools with the subjects mathematics and physics at the University of Bremen.
“The prize means a lot to me”, says a delighted Frerichs. “It is a great honor to be voted Athlete of the Year in my hometown, as I am very proud to still be able to carry out my passion in Bremen. I also feel validated in what I do and this encourages me to continue to make all the efforts that this path entails.”
Frerichs has already achieved a lot in the world of sports. She played her first game for the national youth team in 2018. Since then, she has become a fixture in German field hockey. As the youngest player on the squad, she won gold at the 2022 U21 European Championships in Belgium and competed with the A squad in two appearances on a tour of South America, namely against Belgium and Argentina. She is now part of the national team, and the chances of participating in the 2024 Olympics are very realistic. The exceptional field hockey player also secured her team’s spot in its division in the indoor national league (Hallenbundesliga) ahead of schedule, at the end of 2022. A great success for the Bremen club.
