This year’s COP27 climate conference in Sharm el-Sheik (Egypt) has the key aim of ensuring full implementation of the Paris Agreement. Because time is of the essence.
At the opening ceremony of the COP27 summit of world leaders, Veronika Eyring, a professor at the University of Bremen and researcher at the German Aerospace Center – DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt), gave a highly acclaimed speech. She says what most people in the room think: “Recent climate change is unprecedented. We all know and feel that.” The concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reaches new record levels every year. As a result, global warming was already 1.1 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels in 2020.
The scientist from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the University of Bremen makes an urgent appeal to the public: “The scientific evidence is clear. But we’re not on track. Any further delay in taking collective global action to adapt to climate change and mitigate its impacts will result in us missing the short and fast-closing window of opportunity to secure a livable and sustainable future for all.”
Improving Climate Models
Atmospheric research and climate modeling, including the development and application of artificial intelligence methods, are among the research priorities of Professor Veronika Eyring. Her work and the work of her team contribute significantly to improving climate models and evaluating them with Earth observation data. Her research results provide the basis for decision-making in international climate policy. As the coordinating lead author of Chapter 3 “Human Influence on the Climate System,” she contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report of Working Group I and was involved as an author in the preparation of the Summary for Policymakers (SPM).
The comparison of Earth observation data and Earth system models is seen as an important basis for improving climate predictions.
