Among the numerous research institutions contributing to the University of Bremen’s Excellence Cluster called “The Oceans in the Earth System” are the MARUM-Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research. The areas of research encompassed by the Excellence Cluster range from coastal waters to the deep-sea bed, from the Earth’s atmosphere to the depths of sediment deposits, including research on the past and the future. Researchers belonging to different institutes and disciplines are all pulling together in attempts to better understand the crucial role that oceans play in the Earth’s system.
What does such cross-institute research look like in practice? What are the possibilities opened up by the technology and equipment the researchers have at their disposal? What role does the Excellence Cluster play on the Bremen science landscape in general? And what support can the Federal Government and the state of Bremen offer to consolidate and promote the success of such a cluster? These are some of the questions experts will be discussing at a forthcoming publically held panel debate. The event with the title “Combined knowledge for a better understanding: The Bremen Excellence Cluster ‘The Oceans in the Earth System – MARUM’” will take place on Monday October 17, 2016, at 7:00 p.m.in the Olbers-Saal, Haus der Wissenschaft (Sandstraße 4/5, 28195 Bremen). It is being organized by the Max Planck Länderforum.
University of Bremen professor and director of the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPI), Nicole Dubilier, will hold an introductory talk before opening the discussion that will include herself and a panel comprising:
- Prof. Eva Quante-Brandt, Bremen’s Senator for Science, Health and Consumer Protection
- Prof. Nicole Dubilier, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology
- Prof. Karin Lochte, director of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research (AWI)
- Prof. Bernd Scholz-Reiter, President of the University of Bremen
- Prof. Michael Schulz, Director of MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen
