Dr. Hans Riegel-Fachpreise

In cooperation with the Dr. Hans Riegel Foundation, the University of Bremen awards prizes for outstanding project work from the Sek II (or E- & Q-Phase) in the subjects of biology, chemistry, geography, computer science, mathematics and physics. A jury of scientists selects the (up to) three best works from each area.

The aim of the cooperation is to discover and encourage young talents and introduce them to university studies.

The application deadline for work from the 2024/2025 school year is 15.06.2025 .

Expert juries of scientists will then evaluate all entries. The award ceremony will take place on October 27, 2025.

The winners from last year are listed below.

In total, the Dr. Hans Riegel Foundation and the University of Bremen will award up to 18 prizes, a maximum of three awards per subject area:

1st place:
600 €

2nd place:
400 €

3rd place:
200 €

The schools of the first-place winners will receive a non-cash prize of €250 for math and science lessons.

Experience reports and tips

Johanna Rathke

Learn new things and have fun

“I think it's important to constantly learn something new. If the work is a little different every day, it's fun and that's exactly what I see in the natural sciences.” (Johanna Rathke, 1st place Biology, 2020)

Science, fun and enthusiasm

I am Katrin, 27 years old and I studied Geoscience at the University of Bremen and am now writing my doctoral thesis at the NIOZ research institute in Holland. I recommend every student who is enthusiastic about STEM to dare to submit their research paper. The chances are not bad and, in addition to prize money, you will receive further support from the foundation. You can take part in seminars and the academy and get to know great people and friends. In addition to the scientific exchange, fun and enthusiasm are the priority.

Yvonne

Tips for your paper

My name is Yvonne and I am studying human medicine at the Hannover Medical School. My recommendation for all students is to look for a subject that sparks their personal interest. This makes it much easier to work on the thesis, which will be reflected in the quality of the work through more intensive engagement with the topic. Finally, the work can be discussed with the supervising teacher. The final touches can be made, such as correcting the spelling. The teaching staff can also emphasize the special features of the work in a personal discussion. After that, only a little courage is needed to submit the work. The last step is the easiest, but the most important to have a chance of winning the award.

Mädler

Creative and uncon- ventional ideas

Dr. Kathrin Mädler is a member of the biology jury. She says: “The annual presentation of the Dr. Hans Riegel awards is always a joint highlight for all the natural sciences in Bremen, and every year we are surprised by the many different creative and most importantly unconventional ideas.”
