Solidarity with Members of Boğaziçi University

It is with great concern that the Executive Board of the University of Bremen is observing the massive encroachments on the university autonomy of Turkish universities – most recently the Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. The university management stands in solidarity with all students and academics.

For many years, Boğaziçi University has been an outstanding example of a democratically organized university and of the independence of science. The University of Bremen is connected to Boğaziçi University through long-standing cooperation. The politically motivated appointment of the president against the will of the faculties and students at the beginning of this year, as well as the recent repressive measures against critical individuals and groups, massively violate the right to academic self-determination and severely restrict academic freedom in Turkey.

The Executive Board of the University of Bremen stands in solidarity with the students and scholars of Boğaziçi University and supports their demand for the maintenance of democratic structures and the restoration of university autonomy for Boğaziçi University.
