For inclusion in a master's degree is the completion of studies at the Bachelor's level requirement.
The subject-specific entry requirements are set out in the current Aufnahme-/Zulassungsordnung (admission regulations).

The Master’s programme consists of three thematic profile areas (see „Allgemein“), contents of which can be studied in combination. During the course of the studies, students concentrate on one profile area, in which they will write their Master’s thesis. Additionally, there is a language practice component that strengthens the competent use of English as well as effective presentation and negotiations skills.

The Master’s programme will enable students to deal with literary, cultural history and linguistic positions and dynamics in a research-based mode, to follow innovative developments in the research of English and language teaching and learning, to submit English-language texts and media to a critical scientific study and to look critically at knowledge and text production from within Eurocentric and postcolonial contexts.

The Master’s Degree qualifies for a scientific career in the areas of “cultural history”, linguistics or literature and film studies. It also qualifies for occupation at universities and universities of applied sciences (dt. Fachhochschulen), in adult language teaching, in test centers or teacher training facilities, in cultural organizations, in national and international organizations, in politics or in the diplomatic service. Further potential areas of employment are the media, publishing houses, journalism, creative fiction writing, libraries, translation as well as international operating commercial enterprises.

Expertise

The research profile of the teaching faculty includes aspects of cultural history, gender studies, rewritings of Shakespeare texts, science novels, travel narratives, postcolonial literatures and cultures in North America and the Pacific region, Hollywood, transnational, and postcolonial cinema, varieties of English and corpus linguistics, multimodality, as well as language testing and assessment.
