Study description

In the biology teacher training program, the process of teaching biological, biotechnological and general scientific knowledge and procedures is carried out according to the fundamental principles of teaching and research. In this way, future biology teachers can acquire a contemporary and at the same time future-oriented biological education and acquire the job-specific qualifications that they will need for their later profession.The training to become a biology teacher is carried out in the subject area together with the full-subject students, in the area of subject didactics and educational sciences in specific courses and in school-oriented internships.

Stages of study / curricula / description of modules

The study of biology primarily takes on the following tasks and aims primarily at the following qualifications relevant to the profession:

To impart biological knowledge, skills and abilities that are necessary for mastering the scientific and didactic requirements of the teaching profession.
Provide fundamental knowledge of the various biological systems (from molecules to ecosystems), including their structures, functions, and interactions, and teach the methods and procedures necessary to study and evaluate the various biological systems
imparting in-depth knowledge, skills and abilities, especially in those subject areas and biological sub-disciplines that correspond to the teaching content of secondary levels I and II (these are primarily cell biological, physiological, genetic, evolutionary biological, human biological and ecological content, as well as general knowledge of the major fields of botany and zoology)
Imparting skills for the implementation of biological and general scientific subject content and methods in biology teaching and in other areas in which biological education and/or further biological education take place (e.g. teacher training at secondary level II with vocational specialization, adult education)
Imparting knowledge about the impact of biological research results and enabling students to reflect on their ambivalence and their ethical implications
To impart a general knowledge of the natural sciences, including the ability to be critical and a sense of responsibility for the ways in which scientific knowledge is gained and applied.
Imparting a scientifically based understanding of oneself and the world.

In addition to general biological knowledge, prospective biology teachers also acquire detailed specialized knowledge of content and methods, as well as fundamental knowledge of neighboring scientific disciplines (e.g. chemistry). No less important is the acquisition of knowledge about how modern biology teaching is designed today, both subject-related and interdisciplinary, and how acquired knowledge and skills can be passed on to children and adolescents (application of subject-related, interdisciplinary and subject-didactic qualifications).
