For inclusion in a master's degree is the completion of studies at the Bachelor's level requirement.
The subject-specific entry requirements are set out in the current Aufnahme-/Zulassungsordnung (admission regulations).

The students should familiarize themselves with the latest approaches and modern scientific methods of marine research in general, focusing on marine microbiology and molecular ecology, as well as biogeochemistry.  Examine the interaction of microorganisms, including their biodiversity, with the global biosphere, especially the oceans of the world. Theoretically as well as practically they are taught to analyse, describe, and understand the complexity of microbial networking, element cycles, biogeochemistry and the consequences of microbial activity for the fate of our oceans.

The first year at marmic consists of an intensive 30 hours per week. The goal is to give students the theoretical and practical tools they need for their future research in the field of marine microbiology.
In years 2 - 4 students work on their Ph.D thesis in a research group of the MPI-MM, the University of Bremen, the AWI or the Jacobs University.
Courses in areas relevant to the research of the Ph.D. students are offered as 2 - 3 day workshops or in the form of weekly seminars and are taught by marmic faculty members and leading international scientists. Some of the courses offered are: Statistics in microbial ecology, Thermodynamics workshop, How to design an experiment, Sequencing and sequence analysis workshop, Deep sea ecology and in situ experimentation, Fluid dymanics workshop, or How to write grant proposals.

Lab rotations in different fields of marine sciences

Available upon request and with cooperating research institutions.

The program consists of a theoretical and practical training with lectures, tutorials, practical courses, laboratory rotations, workshops and seminars.

At the end of year one, students take their final exams, consisting of a written test based on the lecture series, and two oral exams based on practical courses and laboratory rotations.The successful completion of these examinations are prerequisites for starting the master thesis.
