The focus of the master’s program is on an interdisciplinary link between business, organizational and occupational psychology contents. The interactive didactics by lecturers and interdisciplinary teams of students is a unique feature in this program. Students carry out independent research projects in exemplary research fields. These projects have relevance for application in the real world. 

In the first semester of the four-semester program, disciplinary foundations of psychology and industrial/organizational psychology as well as business are taught or refreshed. Qualitative and quantitative research methods are another focus of the first semester. In the second semester, industrial and organizational psychology gets a deeper focus. Theoretical approaches of organizational theory are also be looked at. The third semester contains a further specialization of business psychology topics. The fourth semester contains only the master thesis. Graduation from this program allows for PhD studies.

The curriculum of the University of Bremen differs from other German master’s degrees in business psychology due to the interdisciplinary focus of the degree program. Another factor is the high proportion of industrial and organizational psychology content as well as a focus on qualitative methodological research. Therefore, a high level of qualification in the area of quantitative methods (12 CP statistics / mathematics) is required for admission.

Although a semester abroad is not compulsory, it is recommended. In the Course of the advised course and study structure of the program, a semester abroad would be best planned for the third or fourth semester of studies. As a result of the elective range within the major, there is a high flexibility in regard to the courses that can be recognized and therefore a semester abroad can be considered without having to extend the duration of studies. Support in organizing a semester abroad is offered by the faculty’s Office for Practical Experience and International Affairs. As part of the application process for a place at a foreign university, the required foreign language abilities will be verified. When participating in the Sokrates/Erasmus Program students are asked to proof a level of B2 in the respective language of instruction at the host university.
Extensive advisory services in this area are offered by the faculty’s Office for Practical Experience and International Affairs.

The forms of teaching and learning which are used in the master program vary in order to meet requirements of imparting comprehensive theoretical knowledge as well as practical competences. This will be followed against the background of the overarching objective to combine theory, methodology and application. In this respect, the individual modules include among others:

The master’s degree in business psychology mainly includes portfolio examinations. Portfolio examinations include either the preparation of individual work packages or a maximum of three interrelated services (e.g. lesson preparations, presentations, learning diaries, short presentations or homework). In both forms, the partial performances are assessed individually and an overall grade is determined in the end. There are also occasional homework assignments, oral tests and written examinations.

The master’s program prepares for professional roles in management, leadership, personnel, team and organizational development, as well as for tasks in consulting, adult education, job analysis and design. Furthermore, it prepares students for careers in marketing, market research, and quality management. Due to the interdisciplinary skills, graduates are perfectly qualified to take responsibility in many sectors and institutional contexts. Graduates can also continue their academic career in a variety of research fields which include personnel and organizational research, management and leadership research as well as general psychologically oriented social research.

The Chair in Sustainable Management conducts research on the fundamental questions of transforming companies and organizations to a more complex and modern level of development. In addition to a resource-oriented sustainability approach, innovative methods of visualizing complexity, such as system constellations are used. The goal of teaching is to develop transdisciplinary teaching-learning formats in which practitioners, students and scientists can explore current topics together.

The Chair in Human Resources department researches socially relevant issues of work, personnel and economic psychology with a focus on the changes in the world of work driven by digitization and automation. Research topics are high responsibility teams, teamwork and team training, crew resource management, human factors and human-technology interactions, analysis of needs in complex work environments, training evaluations, debriefing and feedback as well as the evaluation of requirements and resources of employees in changing work contexts through digitization and automation. The research is conducted mainly with qualitative methods, but also with quantitative and experimental psychological designs.

The markstones institute conducts research on relevant topics of marketing and brand management. Current technological developments like big data and artificial intelligence are also taken into account. In each of its research projects the institute strives for solutions to relevant practical decision-making problems. This practical relevance of research is achieved through a theory-based and methodologically innovative approach. Research topics include consumer behaviors, brand management, international marketing, internal brand management or social media marketing.

Lectures are held by three professors from the Faculty of Business Studies and Economics with a psychological or behavioral-sciences background and several other lecturers from different research backgrounds.
