Study focus

The course of study has three main areas of focus. The technical focus and vocational scientific and pedagogical aspects of vocational training.

Specialist emphases can be set within the framework of projects, which can be accentuated in electrical engineering or metal engineering.

General studies and non-university practical work

The General Studies comprise courses in which parts of studies and general qualifications related to the professional field are taught. General Studies are only part of the curriculum for courses with a subject-specific profile and comprise 18 CP for the full subject Vocational Education and Training. The vocational didactic project accounts for 9 CP.

The subject Vocational Education and Training does not include a compulsory internship in the narrower sense, but it is necessary to provide evidence of the so-called subject-specific practical activity, in which work processes must be carried out in companies, before registering for the Bachelor thesis. Applicants* with a dual education have fulfilled this requirement.

There are a large number of potential fields of activity in various social and economic sectors in which vocational education and training must be "managed" in the main. Medium-sized and large industrial companies in particular, such as those found in the automotive and aircraft industries, but also in shipbuilding and other metalworking companies, recruit a large proportion of their skilled workers by training young people in their own training departments. Depending on their size and corporate philosophy, further training and education measures are not only carried out within the company but are also offered to external customers. Comparable jobs are also available at public and private training providers as well as at institutions that are involved in vocational training on behalf of the state, such as chambers of trade, chambers of industry and commerce, inter-company training facilities and adult education centres. In addition, there are institutions of associations and trade unions that also perform a wide range of tasks in the field of training and can be regarded as interesting potential employers for Bachelor's degree in vocational education and training. They also need specialists for education management who organise the training.
 
If, after completing this Bachelor's program, you intend to continue your education at the University of Bremen, the following option is open to you:

- The educational and vocational science contents in connection with the technical subjects of the vocational specialisation entitle the holder to take up the Master's degree course "Teaching profession at vocational schools - Technology".

The course of study represents the first stage of training as a vocational school teacher and allows students to take up a one and a half year preparatory service following the Master of Education. This ends with the 2nd state examination, which, if all requirements are met, entitles the student to enter the civil service career in the higher service. In total, approximately 3,500 to 4,000 vocational school teachers are currently required annually throughout Germany (cf. current studies by the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder and the Bertelsmann Foundation [1]), with the greatest demand being in the traditionally strong vocational fields of metalworking, automotive engineering, electrical engineering and information technology.

Finally, the Master of Education, with the appropriate aptitude and inclination, opens the way to a university career with the possibility of a doctorate.

To acquire the qualification to teach at state schools, students must subsequently obtain a Master of Education postgraduate degree (M.Ed). This has to be followed by an 18-month period of practice teaching in school, which ends with the second state exam for teachers in Germany.

Supplementary/optional courses
The Certificate Program Foundation Studies in Digital Media for Education is an optional course for students studying education related subjects.
