Study description
The environmental physics program focusses on understanding the complex relationships between atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, solid earth + climate. Special emphasis is placed on gaining experience in the application of state-of-the-art experimental methods, numerical data analysis using supercomputers + data interpretation via latest models.
Two of the leading research institutes in this field in Germany, the Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) + the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz-Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), are jointly undertaking the teaching + further development of the program.
The syllabus provides the physical, mathematical + chemical principles, which are used in current research undertaken by the participating institutes. Students gain the skills + problem-solving capabilities for subsequent use in experimental design + project development of relevance for a subsequent career in research/the industry.
