The research group of Prof. Dr. Mundt at the University of Bremen, Department 3 – Mathematics and Computer Science, is offering two positions for the duration of three years for a:
Research Assistant (doctoral researcher) (f/m/d)
pay group 13 TV-L
in the field of „Lifelong Machine Learning“
from 1 February 2025 at the earliest with full-time weekly working hours (39,2 hours per week).
The positions are intended for the acquisition of further qualifications with the goal of completing a doctorate.
The time limitation is based on § 2 (1) WissZeitVG (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, i.e. temporary science employment act). Therefore, candidates may only be considered who dispose of the respective scope of qualification periods according to § 2 (1) WissZeitVG.
Job description
The newly established research group “Open World Lifelong Machine Learning (OWL-ML)” at the University of Bremen focuses on modern lifelong machine learning methods and foundations of lifelong artificial intelligence. Respective research spans a variety of central building blocks that are expected to advance current systems with respect to rapid adaptation, sustainability, and robustness. Research topic examples are continual learning, knowledge transfer, memory, learning from heterogeneous data streams, as well as neuro-inspired lifelong learning, intentional forgetting or unlearning, and ethical considerations for system remediation and participatory practice.
Tasks:
- Research and teaching support for lifelong machine learning
- Co-supervision of project work and student theses
- Self-driven research and dissemination of publications
- Support and co-organization of international workshops and conferences
The position is further associated with 4 weekly hours of scientific tasks in co-supervision of lectures in computer science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

Requirements
- Above average master's degree (or equivalent degree/university diploma) in computer science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, or a related discipline
- A solid background in at least one of the following fields: machine learning, ethical AI, or cognitive science
- Fluency in English
- Excellent programming skills
- Commitment to contribute to teaching
- Ability to learn and understand new topics rapidly and extensively
