Job description

The University of Bremen stands for excellence in research and teaching. Open to unconventional approaches in research and teaching, the university has maintained its character as a place where people and ideas can connect easily since its founding in 1971. With a broad range of disciplines, we combine exceptional performance with great innovation potential. As an ambitious research university, we advocate the approach of research-based learning and have a strong interdisciplinary orientation. We actively and cooperatively shape scientific collaborations worldwide.

Today, around 23,000 people study, teach, research, and work on our international campus. In research, teaching, administration, and operations, we are strongly committed to the goals of sustainability, climate justice, and climate neutrality. The Bremen spirit is reflected in our courage to explore new paths, in a supportive community, and in mutual respect and appreciation. With our study and research profile and as part of the European YUFE network, we take on social responsibility in the region, in Europe, and globally.

The professorship is intended to complement the existing expertise in Theoretical Computer Science with a focus on Theoretical Artificial Intelligence. Relevant areas include, for example:

  • Algorithmic Data Analysis
  • Algorithms under Uncertainty
  • Logic-Based AI, Formal Foundations of Knowledge Representation
  • Computational Social Choice, Multi-Agent Systems, Mechanism Design

Beyond this focus, the professor is expected to represent Theoretical Computer Science in its full spectrum and establish research connections to at least one of the following fields: Algorithms, Complexity Theory, or Formal Methods.

This open-rank position (W2 or W3) is designed to attract a broad range of applicants. We are seeking both early-career researchers with recently acquired habilitation-equivalent achievements and strong scientific potential, as well as experienced individuals with leadership skills and outstanding scientific qualifications.

We are looking for an internationally recognized researcher with proven expertise in Theoretical Computer Science, particularly in Artificial Intelligence, as evidenced by relevant scientific publications. The successful candidate will represent their field in research and teaching, further develop it, and contribute to the international scientific profile of the department.

Requirements

The professor will participate in relevant Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Computer Science, as well as in the Master’s program in Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems. We are looking for a candidate with proven teaching experience and a strong commitment to mentoring young researchers. The teaching portfolio should include both fundamental courses and specialized modules. The ability and willingness to teach in both German and English are expected; if lacking, proficiency in one of these languages should be acquired within two years.

General Information

Additionally, we encourage participation in research-based learning concepts and project-based studies. The university values innovation in teaching and contributions to the development and internationalization of study programs. Sensitivity to diversity and gender equality in research and teaching is also expected.

The successful candidate is expected to actively secure external research funding and contribute to research and technology transfer. Experience in these areas is required. The University of Bremen offers numerous opportunities for international and interdisciplinary collaborations within and beyond the faculty. In particular, the professor is expected to engage in the university’s Minds, Media, Machines research cluster and the Data Science Center. Further collaboration opportunities exist with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the Center for Computing and Communication Technologies (TZI), the Collaborative Research Center EASE, and the Research Training Group CAUSE. Candidates should also demonstrate a willingness to collaborate in large-scale research projects and maintain existing international partnerships.

Active participation in academic self-governance is expected.

For an appointment at W2 level, candidates should demonstrate a continuous publication record since their PhD, initial teaching experience, and early-stage mentoring experience. Initial third-party funding experience with renowned funding organizations (e.g., DFG, federal ministries, EU) is desirable. Candidates should also demonstrate the potential and willingness to take on leadership responsibilities. Early evidence of international collaborations is expected.

For an appointment at W3 level, candidates should have a strong leadership role in scientific publications and a broad teaching portfolio with extensive mentoring activities. Substantial third-party funding experience with renowned funding bodies (e.g., DFG, federal ministries, EU) is expected. The candidate should have proven experience in leading organizational units and administrative responsibilities. Extensive international collaborations are required.

In addition to fulfilling general civil service employment requirements, candidates must demonstrate special aptitude for scientific work, evidenced by a relevant university degree and a high-quality PhD in a related field, habilitation equivalent achievements, as well as teaching qualifications. The appointment will be made in accordance with § 18 BremHG and § 116 BremBG.

The University of Bremen and the Department of Computer Science are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, providing a family-friendly and discrimination-sensitive environment. The university is actively engaged in implementing its diversity strategy at all levels. We strongly encourage female scientists to apply as part of our commitment to increasing the proportion of women in academia. The university has been recognized with the "Equal Opportunity: Excellent" award under the German Federal and State Professor Program. We also explicitly welcome applications from scholars with migration backgrounds and international candidates. Applicants with disabilities will be given priority in hiring if they possess equivalent professional and personal qualifications.

Applications, including the usual documents (cover letter, CV with publication list, teaching and research statement, copies of academic degrees, etc.), should be submitted electronically as a single PDF file by April 21st, 2025, quoting reference number P510/25, to:
