The Holocaust Remembrance Day for the victims of Nazism on January 27 commemorates the millions of people who were persecuted or murdered during the Nazis’ totalitarian regime. The University of Bremen is organizing a series of events to mark this occasion. The interested public is cordially invited.
Lecture: “The German Physical Society Under National Socialism”
This year’s central commemoration ceremony will be organized by the Faculty of Physics and Electrical Engineering of the University of Bremen. On Monday, January 28, 2019, at 4 p.m., renowned scientific historian Professor Dieter Hoffmann from the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin will give a lecture entitled “Physiker zwischen Autonomie und Anpassung. Die Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft im Dritten Reich” (physicists between autonomy and adaptation: the German Physical Society under the Third Reich). Hoffmann initiated a research project on the history of this institution during the National Socialist era and, as codirector, played a major role in it. The lecture will be accompanied by musical contributions from Sanaz Afzali, master’s student from the Faculty of Physics and Electrical Engineering.
The venue for the lecture is the lecture hall in GW 1, Universitätsallee, 28359 Bremen. It will take place on a Monday to enable all university members to participate. The “Dies Academicus” also starts at 4 p.m.
Concert: Michael Tippett, “A Child of Our Time”
On Sunday, January 27, Holocaust Remembrance Day for the victims of Nazism, the University of Bremen invites you to an end-of-the-semester concert at 7 p.m. in Bremen Cathedral. The University of Bremen orchestra and choir will sing and play the thoughtful and moving oratorio “A Child of Our Time” by British composer Michael Tippett. The “Child of our Time” is in reference to 17-year-old Jewish youth Herschel Grynszpan, who assassinated a German embassador in Paris. The Nazis used this as grounds for “Kristallnacht” (Night of Broken Glass). Remembrance of Concentration Camp Prisoners in Gröpelingen
The history of the prisoners in the former Bremen-Schützenhof satellite camp in Gröpelingen is the subject of a joint seminar by the University of Bremen, the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung (state center for political education), and the Landesarchäologie Bremen (Bremen state archeology), which will be held on February 7 at 6 p.m. It takes place at the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung, Birkenstrasse 20/21, 28195 Bremen. Teachers and students at the University of Bremen will report on their research in Gröpelingen, which included excavations and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) measurements. As part of the project, they developed an audio walk through Gröpelingen that can be listened to through an app on a smartphone or online and tells the forgotten history of the camp and its prisoners at various stations in the district. The German Bundestag honored student Jan Dohrmann for his extraordinary commitment to the codevelopment of the audio walk. He will participate in the Internationale Jugendbegegnung (international youth meeting) of the German Bundestag and in the commemoration ceremony in the plenary chamber of the Bundestag on January 27.
