Program-specific requirements

The Bachelor's degree program in Management Information Systems includes content from the fields of mathematics, business administration, computer science and business information systems. In addition, general studies represent a separate area of study. The following specializations are available in the Management Information Systems program: IT Management, E-Business, Logistics ( expiring) and Computational Finance.

Notice: 

There may be new examination regulations coming into effect for the summer semester 24 with implications for the study plans listed below. The anticipated major changes will primarily affect the specializations. The following new areas of emphasis will replace the four listed above

According to the new regulations, two specializations have to be chosen. Some areas of emphasis will probably be offered in English. Some foundation modules will change slightly.

Module

The Bachelor's degree program in Management Information Systems has a standard period of study of six semesters and is completed in the sixth semester with the Bachelor's thesis. The study plan below provides an overview of the assignment of the individual courses to the respective semesters, of their temporal scope in semester hours per week (SWS), credit points (CP) as well as working hours (h) including preparation and follow-up time. Credit points (CP) are awarded for a course according to the amount of work required. One CP corresponds to 30 working hours. The working hours do not only take into account the attendance time at the university, but also the preparation and follow-up of the course, e.g. for investigation and reading or studying for an exam. If the program is to be completed in the standard period of study, approximately 30 CP per semester or 60 CP per year must be achieved. At 30 hours of work per CP, this results in an average load of about 40 hours per week.

The study plan represents a recommendation for the course of study. Modules may be taken by students in a different order.

In the Bachelor's program in Management Information Systems, modules with compulsory content are predominantly offered in the first half of the program, often consisting of lectures with supplementary tutorials, the latter facilitating the first-year students' entry into the program. In the second half of the study program, the number of modules with compulsory content decreases and students choose their courses mainly from provided lists in order to deepen their already acquired basic subject knowledge according to their interest and inclination. In this phase they specialize, among other things, in one of four offered specializations (cf. section on specializations). The final examination is the Bachelor's thesis. An English language certificate at the B2 level must be available by the time the Bachelor's thesis is registered.

Note: A new program-specific examination regulation may come into effect in the summer semester 24, which will have an impact on the areas of specialization. The four areas of concentration described in this section will then be replaced by the new areas of concentration Information Technology Management, Digital Business, Government Technology, Responsible Technology and Information Systems Research.

Currently, the following areas of specialization are available in the Business Information Systems program:

• IT Management: Planning, management and control of the IT infrastructure and the information systems based on it. On the one hand, process-oriented approaches to internal or external service provision (such as ITIL) and models of IT governance (e.g. CoBIT) play a role here. On the other hand, it is about modeling business processes that can be mapped in information systems.
• E-business: Use of IT to support, structure and reorganize internal and external business processes. These include, for example, electronic procurement (e-procurement), marketing and customer relationship management (online or e-marketing or e-CRM) and commerce (e-commerce and online stores) as well as electronic distribution channels and payment systems (e-payment). Mobile technologies are playing an increasing role here, enabling the development of new, location- and time-independent as well as localized and personalized business models.
• Logistics(phased out): Provision of goods at the right time in the right place in the right condition. The core processes of logistics are transportation, handling and storage. The planning, management and control of these core processes must be ensured by indispensable activities for generating, processing and controlling leading, accompanying, trailing and opposing information flows. This requires the development and implementation of application systems for procurement, production and distribution logistics as well as systems for supporting interorganizational processes along a supply chain.
• Computational Finance: Use of computer-based methods in finance to solve financial problems, especially in the area of risk and asset management. Possible fields of application are e.g. methods of portfolio optimization, simulation and evaluation of trading strategies, risk analysis and evaluation of securities or credit portfolios or simulation-based valuation of complex financial instruments.

Within the study foci, a clear research and practical reference to current economic and informatics issues is established.

General Studies (and Free Choice) can be used, for example, for the acquisition of language skills.

No semesters abroad are required; however, they are recommended. A semester abroad is best integrated into the second half of the study program. Due to the choice of the major field of study, there is a high degree of flexibility here with regard to the recognition options. Thus, a semester abroad can often be considered in the study planning without delaying the study time. In order to avoid problems, however, the question of credits should be clarified in a "Learning Agreement" before the start of the stay abroad.

Assistance in organizing a semester abroad and advice is provided by the Internationalization or Erasmus Officer of Department 3 (www.uni-bremen.de/fb3/der-fachbereich/organisation/selbstverwaltung/beauftragte).

The terms lecture (V), seminar (S), project (P), exercise (Ü) and tutorial (T) are used to describe different types of events. Lectures are events in which a lecturer lectures for the most part and students listen for the most part. Lectures are often supplemented by exercises and tutorials.
Seminars, in contrast to a lecture, are designed for strong student participation. Here, students can take on presentations on the seminar topic.
In projects, students apply their previously acquired knowledge in solving case studies and subject-specific problems. Here, the attendance course takes up only a small amount of time. In addition to research-based learning and subject-specific consolidation, self-organized project management and teamwork are also of great importance. 

In the compulsory courses of the first semester, the language of instruction is generally German. In the Management Information Systems majors, courses can be offered in German and English. In the elective area, attendance of English-language courses is generally permitted and desired.

After graduation, graduates of the bachelor's degree in Information Systems and Management can work in software development, systems analysis, IT organization, IT project management, consulting, as well as in various special areas such as production and materials management, marketing or controlling. A qualification for self-employment is also possible. The respective fields of work may depend on the chosen major field of study and the orientation of the Bachelor thesis. A further professional qualification can be obtained in everyday working life, e.g. through special trainee programmes, which are often offered by companies.

The Management Information Systems degree program is equally closely related to the subjects of Computer Science and Business Administration. Through the lecturers of both subjects, there are close contacts to the respective research activities and current projects of both study programs.

The Management Information Systems program is taught by professors and research assistants from both departments involved (FB3: Mathematics/Computer Science and FB7: Business Studies and Economics).
