Program-specific requirements

The Bachelor's degree program  in Information Systems and Management includes content from the fields of mathematics, business administration, computer science and management information systems. General Studies is also a separate area of study.

From the third semester onwards, students choose two specializations from the following range:

Digital Business
Responsible Technology
Information Systems Research
Government Technology
IT Management
The first three specializations can be completed entirely in English, the other two entirely in German.  Modules with alternative courses may also be offered in the other language.

 

Module

The Bachelor's degree program in Management Information Systems has a standard period of study of six semesters and is completed in the sixth semester with the Bachelor's thesis.

An overview of the allocation of the individual modules to the respective semesters can be found in the study plan below.

The credit points (CP) listed there are awarded for a module according to the workload. One CP corresponds to 30 hours of work. The working hours include not only the time spent at the university, but also preparation and follow-up time, e.g. for research and reading or studying for an exam. If the course is to be completed within the standard period of study, around 30 CP must be earned per semester. With 30 working hours per CP, this results in an average workload of around 40 hours per week.
 

The study plan is a recommendation for the course of study. Many modules can be taken by students in a different order, as they do not require any special content prerequisites.

In the first semesters, the Bachelor's degree program mainly offers modules with compulsory content, which often consist of lectures with supplementary tutorials, whereby the latter make it easier for first-year students to start their studies. In later semesters, more elective modules are offered, in which students choose their courses mainly from the lists provided in order to deepen the basic subject knowledge they have already acquired, depending on their interests and inclinations. In this phase, they specialize in two of five areas of specialization (see section on major fields). The final examination is the Bachelor's thesis. Proof of English language proficiency at level B2 must be provided by the time of registration for the Bachelor's thesis.

A clear research and practical connection to current economic and IT issues is established within the specializations. Students can choose from the following specializations, of which two are selected:

Digital Business (in English): Advancing digitalization is changing business processes, strategic decisions and the entire business environment. In the Digital Business specialization, we offer you a comprehensive perspective on the impact of digital technologies on all areas of entrepreneurial and social activities. You will learn how digital innovations are changing business models, how they create opportunities for growth and efficiency and how they can also bring challenges and risks. The “Digital Business” focus will enable you to position yourself successfully in an increasingly digitalized world and actively shape digital transformation processes in companies and society.

Government Technology: In the Government Technology major, you will learn how digitalization can be used in politics, government and society through the use of innovative digital technologies, data management and artificial intelligence to strengthen democratic processes and promote efficient public administration. As government is one of the largest sectors with far-reaching societal impact, this major offers unique insights and practical skills to drive change in this important area. You will explore key areas such as eGovernment, which enables modern and citizen-centered administration, Smart City for intelligent urban infrastructures, Digital Public Participation & eParticipation to promote inclusive democratic decision-making, and GovTech, which highlights the cooperation between the state/government and start-ups. Through this specialization, you will not only gain theoretical knowledge, but also practical experience that will enable you to actively participate in shaping a digital future in the public sector.

Information Systems Research (in English): In the coming years, the economy and society will be significantly changed and shaped by a wide variety of digitalization processes. In order to be able to shape these in a future-oriented manner in politics and corporate management, first-class research is required. To prepare you for conducting such research, we offer you basic skills in dealing with methods and theories of current research in management information systems in the Information Systems Research specialization. In addition to preparing you for your final thesis, we also want to open up research-oriented career prospects for you, both at and beyond the university.

IT Management: This specialization has the following contents:

• Strategic planning and organization of processes for the management of IT services
• IT service management according to ITIL v4 and IT governance according to COBIT
• Development and implementation of an information security management system
• Sustainability goals in the operation of IT infrastructures
• Cost-benefit analyses for IT procurement decisions

General Studies (and Free Choice) can be used, for example, for the acquisition of language skills.

No semesters abroad are required; however, they are recommended. A semester abroad is best integrated into the second half of the study program. Due to the choice of the major field of study, there is a high degree of flexibility here with regard to the recognition options. Thus, a semester abroad can often be considered in the study planning without delaying the study time. In order to avoid problems, however, the question of credits should be clarified in a "Learning Agreement" before the start of the stay abroad.

The terms lecture, seminar, project, exercise and tutorial are used to describe different types of events. Lectures are events in which a lecturer lectures for the most part and students listen for the most part. Lectures are often supplemented by exercises and tutorials.
Seminars, in contrast to a lecture, are designed for strong student participation. Here, students can take on presentations on the seminar topic.
In projects, students apply their previously acquired knowledge in solving case studies and subject-specific problems. Here, the attendance course takes up only a small amount of time. In addition to research-based learning and subject-specific consolidation, self-organized project management and teamwork are also of great importance. 

In the compulsory modules, the language of instruction is generally German. Some of the compulsory elective modules are also taught in English. In particular, the specializations Digital Business, Responsible Technology and Information Systems Research are offered in English, while the other two specializations are taught in German.

After graduation, graduates of the bachelor's degree in Information Systems and Management can work in software development, systems analysis, IT organization, IT project management, consulting, as well as in various special areas such as production and materials management, marketing or controlling. A qualification for self-employment is also possible. The respective fields of work may depend on the chosen major field of study and the orientation of the Bachelor thesis. A further professional qualification can be obtained in everyday working life, e.g. through special trainee programmes, which are often offered by companies.

The Management Information Systems degree program is equally closely related to the subjects of Computer Science and Business Administration. Through the lecturers of both subjects, there are close contacts to the respective research activities and current projects of both study programs.

The Management Information Systems program is taught by professors and research assistants from both departments involved (FB3: Mathematics/Computer Science and FB7: Business Studies and Economics).
