Studies encompass societal, economic, political and gender-specific aspects of law and its historical and philosophical foundations, as well as interdisciplinary and socio-scientific approaches. Students also trace the relationship between European and international law. Students are taught the working methods involved in the occupational practice of the judiciary, legal advocacy and legal administration and the necessary key competences and specialist knowledge of foreign languages. The courses contained in the area programmes are designed to enable students the opportunity to pursue their individual academic interests and to deepen their knowledge in compulsory advanced courses, as well as to make acquaintance with associated interdisciplinary and international aspects. Additionally, students learn how to deal critically and independently with special legal matters and novel legal issues concerning topics beyond their own knowledge boundaries.
Students can choose between the following specialisations (it may not always be possible to offer all these options):
- environmental, technical, economic; national, European, and international law
- democracy, human rights, fundamental freedoms; national, European, international
- labour and social law in international and supranational contexts
- health and medical law, as well as consumer law
- European and national business law
- penal law and criminal policy in Europe.
Work practicals involving a total of three months are to be undertaken in the periods between semesters.
Pursuant to Bremen regulations concerning legal training (BremJAPG), students receive an education which qualifies them to take up legal careers in an increasingly integrated European Union and in a constantly changing society: they learn how to fulfil the requirements of the constitution of a democratic welfare state determined by the rule of law. Based on an appropriate curriculum, studies encompass a critical perusal of the academic methods, knowledge and learning capacity necessary for fulfilling tasks in the practice fields of jurisdiction, legal administration and legal consultation. The contents and methods contained in the programme of studies are designed to overome any separation between theory and practice. This is achieved especially by means of providing a socio-scientific foundation and approach, as well as by taking into consideration the requirements of occupational practice.
Together, the university course, the subsequent two-year legal internship and the second state law examination qualify students for the German magistracy (Befähigung zum Richteramt). Graduates can then choose between legal careers at the bar, the judiciary and the administration, as well as in private companies.
