Applications from abroad

Students acquire a comprehensive knowledge of art history and genres, as well as media-specific knowledge of aesthetical products and works of art, how they originate, and the societal contexts within which they relate to other objects, product creations and stagings. The field of Art has a special focus on conditions and perception in artistic production and processes in visual culture, as well as in space and architecture. Students intending to become teachers (Lehramt) are taught skills which enable independent artistic and medial creativity.

The focal studies/areas of specialisation comprise:
1. The history, present-day, and theory of the arts and architecture
2. The history, present-day, and theory of the media
3. aesthetic education
4. Gender issues in teaching and research
5. Artistic and medial work practical (only students studying for 'Lehramt').

It is compulsory for students to undertake a six-week work placement, which is supervised by the field.

Students are recommended to spend one semester at a university abroad during their foundation studies. This can be undertaken as a compatible module at one of Bremen University's partner universities abroad.

Graduates of Art and Art Education can choose between a number of career opportunities. Among other things, they find employment in the field of culture (exhibitions, museums, art teaching...), in public administration and the preservation of monuments and heritage, art dealing, in the media and tourism. Freuently, supplementary qualifications are required that cannot be covered completely during the course of studies. Among such supplementary competencies are computer skills, knowledge in the areas of public relations, foreign languages, economics and law, as well as pedagogy. Some career aspirations may even necessitate supplementary courses of study, for instance restorer, art dealer, publicist, etc.

To acquire the qualification to teach at state schools, students must subsequently obtain a Master of Education postgraduate degree (M.Ed). This has to be followed by an 18-month period of practice teaching in school, which ends with the second state exam for teachers in Germany.

Supplementary/optional courses
The Certificate Program Foundation Studies in Digital Media for Education is an optional course for students studying education related subjects.
