The ShanghaiRanking Consultancy has published the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2023 (Shanghai Ranking). In the field of marine sciences (oceanography), the University of Bremen has been ranked first in Germany and 16th worldwide. The university also leads the table of German universities in geosciences (Earth sciences). On a global level, it has placed 45th out of 500 in this field. In the discipline of atmospheric science, the University of Bremen ranked third in Germany and among the top one hundred worldwide (76 to 100).

Marine, environmental, and climate research play a very important role at our university. Research in these relevant subject areas is an important contribution to research into the consequences of climate change."
Shanghai Ranking began publishing the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by academic subject in 2009. This edition contains rankings of universities in 55 subjects in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine, and social sciences. In total, more than 5000 universities were included in the ranking.
