We Welcome Prof. Dr. Katrin Deinhardt to the Faculty of Biology/Chemistry

Katrin Deinhardt has been a professor of cell biology in the Faculty of Biology/Chemistry at the University of Bremen since the winter semester 2024/2025.

Her main research interest is the impressive diversity and complex structure of individual nerve cells in the brain. She investigates the cellular mechanisms necessary to form nerve cells, to maintain them throughout life, and to adapt them continuously. Her research focuses on transport and signaling processes within the cells that enable them to process new impressions, store memories, and classify information. What interests her most is how these processes interact in a healthy brain and what changes occur in the early stages of neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia.

Nerve Cells: There Are Hardly More Beautiful and Complex Cells

“Cell biology is fascinating because it deals with the basic building block of life. I am particularly enthusiastic about neuronal cell biology – there are hardly any cells that are more beautiful and complex than nerve cells,” says Deinhardt. “I look forward to further developing the connection between cell biology, molecular biology, and neuroscience in Bremen and to conducting exciting research together with my new colleagues.”

Katrin Deinhardt studied biochemistry at Freie Universität Berlin and completed her doctorate in cell biology at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now Cancer Research UK) in London. After a postdoc position in the field of molecular neurosciences at NYU Medical Center's Skirball Institute (USA), she set up her own research group at the University of Southampton (UK), where she taught and conducted research for almost 12 years – most recently as a professor of cellular neurobiology. She also headed the Neuroscience and Pharmacology degree programs there for five years.

Bridge Between Research and Teaching

Since October 2024, she has been a professor of cell biology at the University of Bremen. In addition to her research, she is looking forward to helping shape teaching and actively involving students in research projects. “My first impression of Bremen was one of openness, warmth, and a lively academic exchange – and this impression has only been confirmed. I look forward to doing my part to further the connection between research and teaching.”
