The Bremen Science and Health Senator, Professor Eva Quante-Brandt, congratulated Professor Gabriele Bolte. “The appointment as a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre is a great honor and shows at what a high, international level current health topics, such as the social situation and its effects, are being researched at the IPP.”
The President of the University of Bremen, Professor Bernd Scholz-Reiter, emphasized: “This cooperation is a reflection of the great relevance of science at the University of Bremen for society. The university is characterized by this.”
The WHO chooses scientific institutions that can support their work on a specialist level as collaborating partners. The international circle of collaborating centres analyzes data, judges scientific findings and develops internationally valid statements and political recommendations together with the WHO. The appointment recognizes many years of successful, scientific joint ventures between Professor Gabriele Bolte and the WHO in the field of “Environmental Health Inequalities”. The new WHO Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health Inequalities at the IPP of the University of Bremen is the first collaborating centre focused on this specific topic worldwide.
Professor Gabriele Bolte stressed: “As a WHO Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health Inequalities, our team at the IPP now has better chances of integrating our broad expertise in the areas of environmental and health related social inequalities in international health reporting and scientific statements and political action proposals in environment related health funding.”

The Institute of Public Health and Nursing Research
The Institute of Public Health and Nursing Research (IPP) at the University of Bremen is one of the largest research institutes in this field in Germany. The main aim of the research and teaching is to improve the health and wellbeing of the public. IPP was founded as a scientific institute of the Faculty of Human and Health Sciences in 2005. There are now more than 60 scientists who carry out research and teach in nine departments and working groups. The strengths of the IPP lie with interdisciplinary health and nursing research, research-oriented teaching in the health and nursing degree programs and knowledge transfer in the areas of practical work, politics and society.
