Computer scientist Professor Kerstin Schill has been confirmed as vice president of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and was elected for a second term. Medical scientist Professor Dr. Britta Siegmund was also re-elected as vice president. The art historian Professor Dr. Johannes Grave was newly elected to the Executive Committee as vice president.
Kerstin Schill is a professor of computer science at the University of Bremen, where she heads the Institute for Cognitive Neuroinformatics. Since 2018, she has also been the president of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg in Delmenhorst. In her first term, she was particularly focused on the impact of the digital transformation on the sciences and the associated challenges and opportunities for the disciplines. For example, she was involved in setting up the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in Germany and contributed her expertise, among other things, as chairperson of the NFDI expert panel. She is also a member of the DFG Sustainability Commission.
Professor Michael Schulz was confirmed as a member of the German Research Foundation Senate. The director of MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen was re-elected for a second term for the field of atmospheric, marine, and climate research. As a member and head of DFG senate committees, he has been involved in DFG bodies since 2004. During his first term in office, he was particularly involved in the revision of the DFG statutes and in embedding the concept of sustainability in the DFG's funding activities.
The DFG Senate
The DFG Senate is the science policy committee of the DFG. It addresses the overriding concerns of research and advises governments, parliaments, and authorities by issuing academic statements. It sets priorities in research planning by establishing priority programs and research groups.
