Family Portraits in Film
On Wednesday, May 8, 2019, the CITY46 / Kommunalkino Bremen e.V. will host the 24th International Bremen Film Conference under the motto “Family Portraits.” It combines film and media science lectures and film screenings with public discussions on the topic of the cinematic construction of family and communities. Recently, the rich variety of family portraits in film has contributed to questioning prevailing models of nuclear families and hierarchical family relationships not only in the Western world. The films present alternative, queer, and “diasporic” models of coexistence and elective affinity. These are to be analyzed and discussed in their contextual meaning. One highlight is the first public presentation of exclusive archive material from the childhood of former Bremen professor Ivan Illich. It is historically classified by Michael Loebenstein (Austrian Film Museum), Michaela Scharf and Ingo Zechner (Ludwig Boltzmann Institute, Vienna), and Lindsay Zarwell (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, D.C.). Representations of Living in Magazines
“Browsing Through the Lifestyle Pages – Strategies for Displaying the Domestic Sphere in Magazines” is the title of an international conference being held from Friday, May 10, to Sunday, May 12, 2019. Magazines, newspapers, journals, and media networks with an emphasis on dwelling practices are the main focus of the conference with their serial, didactic aesthetic. The aesthetic structures of the magazine reveal power constellations that address residents and readers as socially and politically active, gendered, and consuming subjects. The international conference is an event of the “Lifestyle pages – German-language home journals from the 19th century to the present and their dissemination as media” research project as part of the living+/-exhibiting research program and is held in cooperation with the Institute for Art History – Film Studies – Art Education at the University of Bremen and the Mariann Steegmann Institut. International Exchange for University Employees
The “Erasmus Staff Week” on “Breaking the Ceiling: Women in International Higher Education and STEM Fields” focuses on the international exchange and continuing education of university administration staff and will be held from May 6 to 10, 2019. It is organized by the international offices of the University of Bremen, the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven, the Bremen University of Applied Sciences, and Jacobs University in cooperation with the Central Commission for Women’s Issues of the University of Bremen. 40 participants from European partner universities from a total of 19 countries are expected. Together with the participants from Bremen universities, they will discuss projects, programs, and measures to improve career opportunities for women in higher education and in mathematics and natural sciences. The kick-off event will take place on May 6, 2019, at the Haus der Wissenschaft, Sandstrasse 4/5, 28195 Bremen, from 10:30 a.m. Senator Professor Eva Quante-Brandt will open the event with a keynote speech at 2:30 p.m. This will be followed by a panel discussion on the topic of “Breaking the Ceiling: Women in Higher Education” with Vice President International and Diversity Professor Eva-Maria Feichtner, Equal Opportunity Officer of the University of Bremen and spokeswoman of the Bremen Landeskonferenz (Bremen state conference – LaKoF) Sylvia Hils, Professor Karin Gottschall of the University of Bremen, and Professor Karin Vosseberg of the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven.
