We Welcome Professor Elda Miramontes García to the Faculty of Geosciences

Since the 2024/2025 winter semester, Elda Miramontes García has been a professor of sedimentology within the Faculty of Geosciences. She is also deputy director of MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences.

Elda Miramontes García's research focuses on processes that determine the shape of the seafloor and the distribution of sediments and other particles in the deep sea, with a particular emphasis on deposits formed by ocean currents. She is also interested in how oceanic circulation interacts with turbidity currents (underwater avalanches) and influences undersea channels. Her goal is to better understand sediment dynamics in modern deep-sea environments in order to improve paleoceanographic and paleoecological reconstructions based on sediment archives. With her expertise in sediment dynamics, she also investigates the processes that transport plastic particles to the seafloor and their environmental impacts.

It is this passion for the environment and sediment dynamics that she shares in her classes, where bachelor's and master's students learn the basics of sedimentology and how to apply them in practice. The direct access to unique collections of sediment cores from around the world and the opportunity to participate in ship expeditions and field work during the course of study is a privilege for teaching staff members and students at the University of Bremen and

facilitates a very high quality of teaching.
The University of Bremen's focus on marine, polar, and climate research and the MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences made the university attractive to Elda Miramontes García. During her time as an assistant professor from June 2019 to October 2024, she was able to familiarize herself with the opportunities offered by marine research at the University of Bremen, which motivated her to become more involved in this field over the long term. She is looking forward to the challenges and new endeavors that will advance marine research and our knowledge of the oceans, the ocean floor, and the Earth system, and help tackle the current climate and environmental crises.
