Physics looks at the basic relationships in nature. It is therefore considered to be the basic science of all natural sciences. Physicists deal with the properties and behavior of matter and fields in space and time as well as the dynamics of space and time itself.
Students should note that combinations of subjects vary according to the school category(elementary/secondary).

Students receive a sound grounding, which covers the full scope of experimental and theoretical physics. They also gain insights into the research specialisations at the University of Bremen: biophysics, solid-state physics, environmental physics, applied optics and the theory of dynamic systems contribute towards Bremen University's outstanding reputation for fundamental research, as well as applied and interdisciplinary research.

Specializations are available in the following subjects: biophysics, computational materials science, solid state physics, theoretical physics, environmental physics.
Courses in the didactics of physics are offered to students intending to become teachers (Lehramt).
The General Studies (GS) form the complementary studies that students can take on beyond the scientific studies in order to acquire individually fitting knowledge and competences. General Studies also include courses on general academic education and career exploration. In the study program Electrical Engineering / Information Technology with Management, methodical subjects (analysis of economic data, statistics) are integrated into the General Studies. In the elective area, students can choose from the GS program offered by the entire university.
General educational science and school pedagogical-didactical basics are taught in Educational Science. The orientation internship is connected to this: it serves to gain initial pedagogical and practical teaching experience in a school context and thus to check one's own pedagogical aptitude and inclination. In the area of key qualifications, interdisciplinary job-related skills are taught, for example methodological and communication skills. At the University of Bremen, "Dealing with heterogeneous learning groups" is a compulsory part of the key qualifications. Depending on the type of school being aimed at, 13-23% of the Bachelor's programme is in this area.
Internships are generally recommended. The module "Career Perspectives" offers the possibility for internships, practicals and insights into the professions occupied by physicists.
Students intending to become teachers (Lehramt) must complete a 7-week practice period during which they teach a physics subject.
Students may undertake a stay abroad, although this is not compulsory.
At the beginning of the course of study, during the teaching of the basics, the teaching takes place mainly in the form of lectures and accompanying exercises and tutorials. In lectures a professor mainly teaches and students mainly listen. Within the corresponding exercises, individual topics and questions from the lecture will be taken up and discussed in depth. Exercises are usually offered by the provider of the lecture or the respective scientific staff. Tutorials are led by senior students. Tutorials serve to deepen the contents of methodically oriented subjects. Later on in the course of study the methods of teaching increasingly change to seminars and project work. In contrast to a lecture, seminars are more geared towards student participation. The topics of the seminar are discussed between students and professors; students can do presentations. Project work means mainly working and researching independently.
Module examinations can be carried out in the following forms:
1. Oral examinations of at least 15 to a maximum of 30 minutes for one-semester modules and of at least 30 minutes to a maximum of 60 minutes for two-semester modules
2. Written Exams of 60 to 180 minutes duration
3. Seminar lectures from 20 to 45 minutes duration
4. Seminar papers
Graduates qualify for admittance to the Master of Education program and a Referendariat period [mandatory school teaching practice] in the following subjects:
Physical principles and models find application in the engineering sciences, as well as in disciplines beyond the natural sciences, such as the quantitative sciences, for instance. The career fields in which physicists find employment are unusually manifold. They include fundamental research at universities and research institutes, various branches of industry, above all in the applied research and development of products and processes, production and distribution, public administration, the patent sector, environmental agencies, and even hospitals.
A bachelor's degree in physics qualifies for graduate studies, e.g. in Physics or Space Sciences and Technologies.
To acquire the qualification to teach at state schools, students must subsequently obtain a Master of Education postgraduate degree (M.Ed). This has to be followed by an 18-month period of practice teaching in school, which ends with the second state exam for teachers in Germany.
Supplementary/optional courses
The Certificate Program Foundation Studies in Digital Media for Education is an optional course for students studying education related subjects.
