Applications from abroad

The Bachelor's program in Computer Science is designed for six semesters and ends with the degree "Bachelor of Science" (B.Sc.). (For students with the study profile "Dual Studies in Computer Science", the study plan is stretched to eight semesters). The study program is modular. Some courses are fixed. Others can be taken from a predefined choice of courses.
The courses are assigned to one of the following six areas:
    - Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science
    - Practical and Technical Computer Science
    - Applied Computer Science
    - Projects
    - General Studies
In the first semesters mainly general, basic and indispensable knowledge is taught. In later semesters there are also opportunities for individual specialization. In addition to a wide range of advanced courses, the Bachelor's project is a specialty of Bremen's computer science degree courses. Here, topics of practical importance are worked on intensively in groups over a longer period of time.

 COMPLEMENTARY SUBJECT:
The study of the complementary subject Computer Science in the two-subject Bachelor covers one third of the program (60 of a total of 180 credits). Two modules are fixed (compulsory modules). With regard to the other modules, students can choose from selection catalogs. The modules are each assigned to one of the following five areas:

    - Practical Computer Science
    - Basics
    - Advanced
    - Specialization
    - General Studies

The great individual freedom of choice in the content of the Bachelor's complementary subject of Computer Science offers students of different profile subjects sensible combination possibilities with subjects in the humanities or media sciences as well as with subjects in the social, cultural or natural sciences.

Module

The range of elective courses in the program covers a broad spectrum, from technical-mathematical basics to concepts and realizations of information technology systems to questions of social consequences. The elective courses are related to the main research areas of the scientists active in the program.
In the consecutive Master's program in Computer Science, students have the option of setting their own individual focus as well as aligning their studies to one of the following four profiles:
-Security and Quality (SQ)
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Digital Media and Interaction (DMI)
- Visual and Medical Computing (VMC)
If you plan to choose one of these specializations in your master's degree, you should already lay some foundations for it in your bachelor's degree when selecting your advanced courses.

General Studies include supplementary studies on the one hand and the so-called free choice on the other. Supplementary studies include various areas, such as languages or key skills. In the free choice, students can choose courses from the supplementary studies as well as further advanced and in- depth courses in computer science.

A semester abroad is not mandatory, but possible and recommended (preferably in the fourth semester in the standard course of study). Achievements during a semester abroad can be credited towards the degree program. The question of credit transfer should therefore be clarified in a Learning Agreement before the start of the stay abroad. Interested students should contact the Erasmus representative or the Computer Science Study Center as early as possible. Information events on the semester abroad are offered annually. In addition to traditional forms of teaching, such as lectures, tutorials and seminars, projects play a particularly important role in the full degree course. These prepare students to solve extensive problems from professional practice cooperatively in teams based on the division of labor.

VOLLFACH:

Fields of employment for IT specialists can be varied: they find jobs in industry and business as well as in the public sector.

They work primarily in the area of software development, but also in the production of computer hardware as well as in research and teaching. In order to take this diversity into account, the course of study should enable students to adapt to the rapidly changing demands of professional practice.

Computer science studies impart general, basic knowledge, but also special instrumental skills, emphasising the basics over skills. At a scientific, research-oriented level, specialist knowledge, methods and skills are imparted that qualify the profession in the field of computer science. In addition, the course of study also offers the opportunity to specialise - also in a postgraduate Master's programme. This makes it also suitable as a basis for further academic qualification (doctorate). The combination of the bachelor's degree in computer science with a master's degree course of another, usually related subject (or vice versa) offers the possibility to acquire a multiple qualification.

COMPLEMENTARY SUBJECT:

In the course of studies, some basic specialist knowledge, methods and skills are imparted. This allows an understanding of information technology systems as well as their applications and effects and the work of computer scientists. Depending on the areas of specialisation and the main subject, different professional perspectives may arise.

With regard to the possibility of an additional Master's programme, it is advisable to read the admission regulations for the Master's programmes at an early stage in order to better orientate the course of the Bachelor's programme in this direction.

Computer Science

The department of computer science covers research and teaching topics from a variety of areas such as robotics, computer graphics, virtual reality, cognitive systems, data bases, logistics, neuroinformatics, efficient algorithms, information management, artificial intelligence, computer networks, cyber-physical systems, distributed systems and software engineering. 

There are currently 20 full-time professorships in computer science, which together with a large number of scientific employees offer courses in computer science. Additional courses are offered by lecturers, retired university professors, cooperation and honorary professors, lecturers from other subjects and, if necessary, lecturers.

Bremen Informatics has a wide range of contacts with other informatics research institutions in Germany and worldwide. Computer science research groups are involved in the Bremen site of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and the Institute for Information Management Bremen (ifib), among others. There is also a wide range of local, national and international collaborations with other research groups in computer science and other disciplines. In the area of transfer, there are intensive contacts with business and industry, including through the Technology Center for Information Technology (TZI).
