We Welcome Prof. Dr. Joke Lübbecke to the Faculty of Physics/Electrical Engineering

Joke Lübbecke has been a professor of physical oceanography in the Faculty of Physics/Electrical Engineering since March 2025.

Joke Lübbecke's research focuses on ocean currents and changes in temperature in the upper ocean on time scales of months to decades, particularly in the tropical Atlantic and Pacific. Her goal is to understand the processes that cause heat waves in the sea, for example, and how these vary with climate change. Extreme temperatures at the sea surface influence precipitation and other weather events and have strong impacts on the marine ecosystem.

After completing her doctorate in physical oceanography at the IfM-GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research and the University of Kiel, Joke Lübbecke worked as a postdoc at the NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) in Seattle, USA, and then as an assistant professor at GEOMAR in Kiel, Germany. In addition to research, she particularly enjoys supervising doctoral students and interacting with undergraduates.

In Bremen, she is taking on “a large active group with a wide range of oceanographic expertise.” She is very much looking forward to the work, as the University of Bremen with its high-profile area in marine research offers an excellent environment and many opportunities for collaboration.
