Modern Building for Biology: BIOM Inaugurated

The new teaching and research building for biology is finished. BIOM was officially inaugurated on Tuesday, March 14. The building offers space for around 1, 000 students and 100 employees. More than 5,000 square meters are available. The rooms can be used flexibly.

Climate chambers, wet laboratories, seminar rooms, and offices: BIOM will provide Faculty 2 of the University of Bremen, Biology, with a new, modern location. On Tuesday, 14 March 2023, the new building on James-Watt-Strasse was inaugurated, where around 1,000 students and around 100 employees will learn, research, and teach.

In addition to rooms for teaching and research, BIOM also has flexibly – and thus sustainable – usable space on offer on a total of around 5,200 square meters. As far as possible, the fields of marine biology, ecology, and molecular biology, which are closely linked in terms of content, will move into the new building. BIOM will be funded with a total of around €45 million from the budget of the Senator for Science and Ports.
Claudia Schilling, Senator for Science and Ports: “BIOM is of strategic importance for Bremen’s science landscape. This is because we are creating the conditions necessary to maintain the excellent level of molecular and marine biological research at the University of Bremen, thereby further expanding its third-party funding and its international reputation.”

Professor Jutta Günther, President of the University of Bremen, emphasizes: “With the new BIOM research and teaching building, the University of Bremen is getting a state-of-the-art building for biology and can literally get to the bottom of the societal issues of sustainability and climate neutrality. In BIOM, working groups, labs, and teaching spaces are coming closer together – an excellent basis for research-based learning that has a long tradition at the University of Bremen since it was founded.”

The original completion period (September 2021) has been delayed due, among other things, to coronavirus-related protective measures. Since construction began in spring 2019, the prices of materials and much more have risen, resulting in additional costs. The budget has currently been exceeded by €2.56 million. This is to be offset by potential savings in the university infrastructure program within the framework of the Bremen Fund.

Facts about BIOM:

- Design: Kister Scheithauer Gross (ksg) architect offices in Cologne and Leipzig
- Approx. 1,500 m² of office space
- Approx. 900 m² of seminar and teaching space
- Approx. 2,800 m² of laboratory space
