Guest: Prof. Fabio La Mantia

Professor for Production Engineering, Energy Storage and Conversion Systems, University of Bremen, Germany

In the last few years, aqueous Zn-ion batteries have attracted a great attention as energy storage devices for stationary applications on earth, thanks to their high safety and environmental friendliness. However, the high abundance of the raw materials and facile and robust assembly allow for their application also in the human space exploration. Here, an overview of some recent strategies adopted to optimise the cycle life of the zinc-ion batteries based on metallic zinc anodes and copper hexacyanoferrate cathodes will be shown.

Fabio La Mantia graduated in Chemical Engineering at the University of Palermo (Italy) in 2005. He received his Ph.D. in 2008 from ETH Zürich (Switzerland), working on the operando investigation of lithium-ion batteries. He has been post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University, and he is currently full professor at the University of Bremen. His research interests range from applied electrochemistry (Li-ion batteries, aqueous zinc-ion batteries, and electrochemical ion pumping) to fundamentals of electrochemistry (dynamic impedance spectroscopy, frequency response analysis, electron- and ion-transfer at the interface. He has authored more than 150 papers and has an H-index of 44.
