Für die Aufnahme in einen Masterstudiengang ist der Abschluss eines Studiums auf Bachelor-Niveau Voraussetzung. Die fachspezifischen Zugangsvoraussetzungen sind in der aktuellen Aufnahme-/Zulassungsordnung (s. u.) geregelt. Darin enthalten sind auch die unterschiedlichen Fristen für die Nachweiserbringung.

In the master's program in business studies, the focus is not on teaching detailed knowledge, but rather on skills for developing complex solutions to problems that build on a broad education in business and economics issues. Given the breadth of research questions in business studies, areas of emphasis are inevitable and also necessary. The Master program offers eight majors, whereof two have to be chosen by the students:

1. Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management:
The major in Start-up and SME Management deals with entrepreneurial thinking and action as a driver of growth, success and economic renewal. The reference objects are start-up companies as well as medium-sized and family businesses. These businesses are considered to be the engines of the development of our economy and our prosperity and stand out from other businesses due to their special governance structures. This specialization focuses in particular on the international activities of young, family and medium-sized enterprises and their coordination, which is becoming increasingly important for these enterprises.

2. Marketing and Brand Management:
The focus of the Marketing and Brand Management area is the identity-based brand management approach. This approach sees brand identity as the decisive factor that makes a brand authentic and differentiates it in the long term.

3. International Management:
Multinational companies control and coordinate complex value chains across different economies and institutional environments. Questions about how companies adapt their strategies and structures to meet the challenges of an uncertain environment and what consequences their actions have on their respective countries of origin and destination are the focus of the major International Management.

4. Finance:
The special research profile in the area of Finance lies in the sub-areas of empirical financial market research, financial analysis and portfolio management, as well as selected issues of bank management.

5. Accounting:
On the one hand, the focus is on current problems in the application of complex IFRS; on the other hand, capital market-oriented effects of external accounting are examined with the help of econometric methods. Special emphasis is placed on the independent analysis of data in individual and group work as well as the presentation of the results obtained.

6. Business Taxation:
The core element of business taxation is the analysis of the impact of taxation on economic decisions. The research focuses on selected areas of tax effects, tax planning and tax law design. In view of the worldwide opening of markets and the overcoming of national borders, the effects of international tax law and national tax laws on the investment and financing activities of multinational companies are also analyzed. Due to the connection between the tax consulting and auditing professions, the teaching of application-related knowledge of business auditing is added to this area.

7. Innovation Economics:
Students learn basic theoretical concepts from the field of Innovation Economics and gain insights into the area of innovation governance. To this end, some formal models and tools of network analysis are introduced to enhance the understanding of innovation-driven economic change. In addition, behavioral science aspects are introduced to focus on the role of human cognition in the novelty generation process. A historical perspective will enhance the understanding of long-term economic change.

The entire master's program is modularized. Five major modules can be taken in each major, which are the modules 1-4 with 6 CP each and the project module (12 CP). The program is supplemented by up to five elective modules (6 CP each). The elective modules can be subject-specific supplements to the majors or supplementary subjects such as language courses, international trade law, methods, etc. The program is completed with the master's thesis, which is written in the fourth semester.

Module Guide

A total of 120 CP are awarded in the master's program, with 30 CP per semester distributed evenly over the entire duration of the program.
Students choose two majors in the first semester. All offered majors can be combined.
Each major consists of five modules. Module 1 teaches the basics of the respective major. In the modules 2 to 4, the content of the respective major subject is deepened. The major ends with the project module. The program also includes up to five elective modules, which students select according to their own interests.

The Master's program has a duration of four semesters and is structured as follows:

1st semester: In the first semester, students take the modules 1 and 2 of each of the two chosen majors. In addition, one elective module (6 CP) must be selected from the current range of courses.

2nd semester: In the second semester, students take the modules 3 and 4 of the chosen major and a second elective module (6 CP) from the current range of courses.

3rd semester: The third semester is used to develop skills in scientific work with a view to the final thesis in the fourth semester. For this purpose, a project module (12 CP) in one major must be taken. Furthermore, up to three additional elective modules can be chosen. However, students have the option to replace two of these elective modules with the project module of their second major.

4th semester: The program is completed in the fourth semester with the master's thesis (30 CP). In some cases, the master thesis is accompanied by a seminar.

The students each take two majors (see section on study content).

Within the study program, students take an additional five elective modules, which can deepen or complement their majors. For example, the following elective modules are currently offered:
- Econometrics,
- Advanced Econometrics,
- Current Problems in IFRS Accounting,
- Current Issues in Local Public Finance,
- Auditing and Controlling,
- Tax Reorganisation Law,
- International Commercial Law and
- all "Module 1" of all majors.

Upon request, the Master's Examination Board can also recognize modules in the amount of 6 CP from other Master's programs as well as language courses of the Language Center of the Universities in the State of Bremen (SZHB).

Internships are not planned in the master's program, but can be carried out at the students' own request and initiative during the lecture-free times. The faculty's Office for Practice and Transfer is available to answer any questions regarding internships. Students are also supported in their search for internships by the faculty's own career portal "7Careers" or by the central Career Center of the University of Bremen.

An alternative to the internship is the Praxis Summer Camp (6 CP / General Studies). It is an intensive 3-week format with a high practical relevance during the lecture and exam-free period in August of each year. Various companies of different industries and sizes bring in specific project tasks, which are worked on by small student teams (max. 5 students). In most cases, a large part of the time is spent working directly in the company. The teams often work together on an interdisciplinary basis and also, in part, with students from our international partner universities. While the kick-off and final events are fixed dates in the plenum, the project duration in between is coordinated individually in the teams, together with lecturing coaches and the companies. The project results of all teams are presented at the final event.

The faculty maintains intensive contacts with companies and offers students, among other things, the faculty career day on the second Wednesday in November. This is a career fair that offers contact with companies directly in the faculty's rooms. Another practical format, the Career Camp, always takes place at the end of the lecture-free period of the winter semester (6 CP / General Studies). It is an intensive career week all about career entry, career orientation and networking with potential employers.

Semesters abroad are not mandatory - however, they are recommended and the faculty provides support and advice. For example, the faculty maintains more than 80 cooperations with partner universities in the ERASMUS area and worldwide (Africa, Asia, South and North America). We also offer various scholarship opportunities, such as for the partner university with the University of the Freestate in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Students who receive a place at this university can expect a DAAD-ISAP scholarship of over 900 Euros plus a travel allowance. We also offer tuition-free stays at our U.S. partner universities such as the State University of New York at Binghamton or Stony Brook. An outstanding opportunity to obtain two degrees at the same time is offered with the double master's agreement with the University of Trento in Italy. The first master's year is spent in Bremen and the second in Trento. At the end you will receive two full degrees. Knowledge of the Italian language is not mandatory.

A semester abroad can best be integrated into the fourth or fifth semester based on the recommended study plan. The chosen major offers a high degree of flexibility with regard to the possibilities of recognition. Thus, a semester abroad can usually be included in the study plan without extending the total time of study. Assistance in organizing a semester abroad is offered by the faculty's Office for International Affairs.

The recognition of study achievements abroad is facilitated by the conclusion of Learning Agreements. Students need to discuss the courses they want to include in their learning agreements with the Office of International Affairs at the beginning of the planned semester abroad. To apply for a study abroad position, check the necessary foreign language requirements. Within the framework of the Erasmus program, the B2 level of the respective language of instruction at the host university must be proven. This B2 level must be proven by means of language certificates. Proof via the Abitur certificate is not sufficient.

In the Master's degree program in Business Studies, teaching regularly takes place in the form of seminars.
In contrast to a lecture, seminars are more strongly oriented towards student participation. The topics of the seminar are discussed together. Students can, among other things, give presentations on the seminar topic.
In the project module, students apply their previously acquired knowledge, e.g. in solving case studies and subject-specific issues.

The graduates' fields of activity are oriented towards both internationally operating companies and companies in the regional economy, which have a need for well-trained graduates in business studies in order to secure and expand their competitive situation.

Graduates from the major in finance, accounting and taxation are highly attractive and qualified for the regional and supra-regional market of management consulting (e.g. tax and auditing companies, general and specialized management consulting, law firms), financial institutions (banks, insurance companies and corporations), public authorities as well as associations.

Typical fields of activity for graduates of the study areas International Management, Start-up and SME Management as well as Marketing and Brand Management range from their own entrepreneurial activities (business start-ups) to activities in regional, national and internationally operating industrial, service and trading companies. In addition, the education is aimed at all professional fields in the areas of marketing, sales and communication.

The major in Logistics prepares students for the differentiated logistical fields of activity in industry, trade and services.

The special economics course in Innovation Economics prepares future graduates for activities in the fields of competition policy, economic policy, economic consulting, technology transfer and contract research.

The faculty maintains close contacts with companies and offers students various formats for professional orientation. For example, there is the Faculty Career Day, which is a practical fair at the university that enables students to make contact with companies in the faculty’s rooms.

The graduate group "Diginomics - Digitization, Economy and Society" investigates entrepreneurial, ethical and socio-political issues for emerging or newly forming digital markets, value chains and organizations. Content includes issues related to blockchain, digital finance, artificial intelligence, and the platform economy. Likewise, work is being done on the development of innovative methods such as self-learning algorithms.
