Program-specific requirements

The concept behind the bachelor’s degree in History at the University of Bremen encompasses four core elements: In the initial stages, students are made familiar with time periods and areas of historical scholarship, specific working techniques, and methods. In a second phase, they focus on methods, language competences, regions, and epoch-transcending foundation knowledge. Their specialist academic training is rounded off by profile building in the area of compulsory electives, in which they focus on central aspects of historical processes of change oriented towards four thematic fields of cultural history. Parallel to these three study phases, students can study more career-relevant elements by choosing from courses in the areas of complementary studies/ General Studies.

Students pursuing a career in teaching at state schools are taught competencies and skills in teaching history as a school subject, including didactics, and a subsidiary subject, as well as special courses for teachers (studies in education, didactics, placements and key qualifications).

Students are encouraged to undertake periods of study abroad. Stay abroad are usually for one semester and undertaken in the third or fourth semester of the programme. Click here for more information
