Kulturwissenschaft / Cultural Research examines cultures as open processes in which people negotiate how they live together, communicate and give meaning and purpose to their lives. In Bremen, the course focuses on ethnology/social and cultural anthropology as well as communication and media studies, with a focus on ethnographic-qualitative methods. This interdisciplinary combination is unique in Germany. All the topics we study - interactions, conflicts, social movements, the circulation of material objects as well as media, film and photography - are placed in their political, economic and historical contexts. Our teaching addresses topics such as power and politics, urban diversity, cultures of nature, film, consumer and corporate cultures, (anti-)racism, migration and diaspora, politics of memory, and digitalization.
